Protest at Satya Wacana<\/p>\n
SALATIGA, Central Java: Several hundred students and teachers
\nof Satya Wacana Christian University staged a peaceful
\ndemonstration yesterday in protest of the management's inability
\nto resolve the year-old conflict sparked by last year's dismissal
\nof a popular lecturer.<\/p>\n
Under the heavy presence of security officers, the protesters
\ncriticized rector John JOI Ihalauw for his inability to end the
\ndispute which has occasionally broken into physical clashes
\nbetween opposing camps.<\/p>\n
The tension was triggered by the dismissal of outspoken
\nacademic Arief Budiman in November last year for disciplinary
\nreasons. His supporters describe the dismissal as unfair and are
\ndemanding his reinstatement.<\/p>\n
Last month, Arief won the legal battle over his firing but the
\nuniversity's management has said it will appeal.<\/p>\n
The demonstrators filed a petition with the management and the
\nfounding churches, saying that lecturers will go on strike until
