Protection for migrant workers called for<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Women's rights activists urged members of the
\nOrganization of Islamic Conference (OIC) yesterday to do more to
\nlegally protect the migrant workers in their respective
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
Women's Solidarity submitted a petition to OIC ministers
\nattending a conference at the Jakarta Convention Center.<\/p>\n
The banner-waving demonstrators chanted slogans criticizing
\nOIC officials for not doing enough to protect migrant workers.<\/p>\n
They said the conditions suffered by many women migrant
\nworkers in the organization's 54 member countries were deplorable
\nand the governments should do something about it.<\/p>\n
\"It is time OIC members translate the 'solidarity among
\nIslamic countries' slogan into concrete action to protect migrant
\nworkers,\" said the petition signed by Tati Krisnawati, the
\ngroup's chairperson.<\/p>\n
The group also expressed their concern that the OIC ministers
\nhave failed to address the problems of the common people and
\nmigrant workers, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Thousands of Indonesian women work in the Middle East,
\nparticularly in Saudi Arabia. The group, with relatives of
\nworkers who have died or allegedly been mistreated in Saudi
\nArabia, also demonstrated their concerns at the foreign affairs
\nministry Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The letter said many OIC members send or employ migrant
\nworkers in large numbers. \"We would like to convey our deepest
\nconcern about the migrant workers', especially women's, lack of
\nlegal protection.\"<\/p>\n
They urged member countries to ratify the international
\nconvention on the protection of rights of all migrants workers
\nand members of their families.<\/p>\n
Responding to the group's demand, Indonesian Foreign Minister
\nAli Alatas said the conference also discussed the fate of common
\npeople.<\/p>\n
\"We discussed issues related to migrant workers and refugees.
\nWe are concerned about workers in general,\" he said. (pan)<\/p>",
