        "content": "<p>Protect Mangrove forests: Soeharto<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto has instructed the city<br>\nadministration to protect the mangrove forests on the northern<br>\ncoastal area.<\/p>\n<p>\"This is imperative to avoid environmental pollution as well<br>\nas to further develop the northern coastal area,\" Soeharto said<br>\nat the Bina Graha presidential office yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He was speaking after having listened to a report by Governor<br>\nSurjadi Soedirdja on the reclamation planning of the northern<br>\ncoastal area.<\/p>\n<p>Also on hand were Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono, Minister<br>\nof Public Works Radinal Moochtar, Minister of Defense and<br>\nSecurity Edi Sudradjat, Minister of Environment Sarwono<br>\nKusumaatmadja, Minister of National Development Planning<br>\n\/Chairman of the National Development Planning Board Ginandjar<br>\nKartasasmita, Minister of Transportation  Harjanto Dhanutirto and<br>\nMinister of Agrarian Affairs\/Chairman of National Land Agency<br>\nSoni Harsono.<\/p>\n<p>The President pointed out that without the forests the people<br>\nliving nearby would be deprived of their source of livelihood.<\/p>\n<p>On the occasion, Soeharto gave the go ahead to the<br>\nadministration's plans for the reclamation of the northern<br>\ncoastal area. The reclamation will cover a 32 kilometer length of<br>\nland 1.5 km in width. It will practically cover the northern<br>\ncoastal parts of the city, except the Tanjung Priok seaport.<\/p>\n<p>The President said the costs for the reclamation work should<br>\nnot be taken from the state budget. \"The city administration<br>\nshould cooperate with private companies to fund it.\"<\/p>\n<p>He also asked Governor Surjadi to cooperate with the West Java<br>\nprovincial administration which is also planning the reclamation<br>\nof the western and eastern parts of its coastal area.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime Governor Surjadi told reporters that it would<br>\ntake 20 to 30 years for the city administration to complete this<br>\ngigantic project. He estimated a fund of around Rp 200 billion is<br>\nneeded to finance the project for the first five years. (bas)<\/p>",
