Prosperity for all<\/p>\n
The development efforts begun by the government more than 25
\nyears ago have borne fruit. The rate of inflation has been
\nbrought down to a one-digit level and per capita income has
\nincreased to about US$800 a year. The number of people living in
\npoverty has decreased to below 27 million from the initial number
\nof around three times that.<\/p>\n
Besides these achievements, however, many sectors of the
\neconomy still need to be put in order. The number of jobless has
\nincreased as a consequence of growth in the education sector. The
\nnumber of people in the workforce has increased while the number
\nof jobs available remains inadequate. Conditions are complicated
\ndue to the fact that school curriculums often are not in line
\nwith the kinds of skills in demand.<\/p>\n
The shift of employment opportunities from the agrarian sector
\nto the industrial also deserves to be noted. It would be most
\nencouraging if this trend indicated a growing interest in the
\nindustrial sector.<\/p>\n
However, the shifts in land use causing people to lose their
\nsources of livelihood should be taken into account. These same
\npeople do not have the education or skills to suit the
\noccupations available -- yet their needs remain unchanged.<\/p>\n
These trends affect not only people living in agrarian zones
\nbut also the coastal populations. This produces a condition which
\ncontradicts the aim of development by creating new poverty.
\nBusinesspersons should therefore demonstrate their sense of
\nresponsibility by creating business opportunities that are
\nsuitable to the population and their living environment.<\/p>\n
