Prosecutors urge no leniency for Abdul Jabar<\/p>\n

The prosecution demanded on Thursday that the alleged bomber of
\nthe Philippines ambassador's residence, Abdul Jabar, not be shown
\nany leniency as the evidence proved beyond all reasonable doubt
\nthat he had been actively involved in the bombing.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Suharto told the Central Jakarta District Court
\nthat Abdul Jabar had been actively involved from the planning
\nstage right through to the detonation of the bomb in front of the
\nambassador's house.<\/p>\n
Abdul Jabar was also alleged to have been involved in the
\nbombing of two churches in Jakarta around the same time.<\/p>\n
Suharto said that although the defendant had cooperated
\nthroughout the trial, there was no convincing reason to reduce
\nthe prosecution's sentence recommendation as the bombings had
\nclaimed two lives.<\/p>\n
\"We, on behalf of all citizens who desire peace in this
\ncountry, recommend that he receive the maximum sentence allowed
\nfor this offense,\" he told the court.<\/p>\n
Thursday's session was devoted to the hearing of legal
\narguments from the prosecution.<\/p>\n
If proven guilty, the defendant could receive the death
\npenalty. In Indonesia, execution is normally by firing squad.<\/p>\n
Wahyu Ramdhani for the defense argued that his client did not
\ndeserve the death penalty as the role he had played was little
\nmore than that of an errand boy.<\/p>\n
\"He was only a helper rather than someone who aided and
\nabetted the other perpetrators as claimed in the indictment,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Along with Dedy Setiono, and Fatur Rohman Al-Ghozi -- who was
\nconvicted in the Philippines on terror charges but recently
\nescaped from jail and still remains at large -- Jabar admitted to
\nparking a car containing a bomb outside the residence of the
\nPhilippines ambassador in Central Jakarta on Aug. 1, 2001.<\/p>\n
He was assigned to watch the residence and to tell Al-Ghozi
\nwhen to detonate the bomb.<\/p>\n
The blast killed security guard Sofyan Hendrawan and housemaid
\nSuhantin, and injured 21 other people, including Ambassador
\nLeonides T. Caday, who was badly wounded.<\/p>",
