Prosecutors unmoved over Tibo<\/p>\n
PALU, Central Sulawesi (JP): The team of prosecutors stood
\nfirm by their demand on Tuesday for the death penalty for three
\ndefendants charged with instigating the Poso riots, which claimed
\nhundreds of lives last year.<\/p>\n
The prosecutors, represented by Latara, reiterated their
\ndemand soon after the lawyers of Fabianus Tibo, Dominggus da
\nSilva and Marinus Riwu, read their defense statements.<\/p>\n
\"Based on witnesses' testimony, the three defendants were
\nguilty of violating Article 340 of the Criminal Code, relating to
\npremeditated murder, which is punishable by death,\" prosecutor
\nLatara told the panel of judges presided over by Soedarmo.<\/p>\n
The prosecutors had earlier told the court that the defendants
\nhad played an active role in the sectarian clash which took place
\nbetween May 24 and Sept. 20 last year.<\/p>\n
Tuesday's court hearing began with the lawyers' defense
\nstatements.<\/p>\n
The lawyers, Robert Bofe, Felix Manurung and Elvis, taking
\nturns to read the 139-page rebuttal, asked the court to hand down
\nas light a punishment as possible to the defendants.<\/p>\n
Thousands of visitors packed the grounds of the court building
\nshouting abuses at both the defendants and their lawyers.
