Prosecutors to file Beddu charges<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State prosecutors plan to either bring
\ncorruption charges on Monday against former chief of the State
\nLogistics Agency (Bulog), Beddu Amang, or to extend his house
\narrest status for another 30 days, an official said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta Prosecutors' Office assistant for special crimes,
\nAndi Syarifuddin, said that his team needed more time to complete
\nthe charges, which center on Beddu's alleged abuse of power in a
\nland exchange deal in 1995.<\/p>\n
\"We are eager to win the case, so we have to be careful in
\npreparing the indictment. I hope to file it with the South
\nJakarta District Court on Monday, but if we cannot, then we'll
\nextend his detention,\" Andi said.<\/p>\n
Andi also revealed that the indictment against Beddu would
\nalso cover the involvement of businessman Hokiarto.<\/p>\n
Beddu was initially under the custody of the Attorney
\nGeneral's Office but was placed under house arrest on Dec. 4 due
\nto illness.<\/p>\n
His arrest term will expire on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Beddu was indicted last year for his alleged involvement in
\nthe land exchange deal with wholesale firm PT Goro Batara Sakti,
\nwhich caused Rp 76.7 billion in state losses.<\/p>\n
The same case resulted in former president Soeharto's favorite
\nson Hutomo Mandala Putra and his business associate Ricardo
\nGelael, commissioner and executive of PT Goro respectively, being
\nsentenced to 18 months in prison by the Supreme Court. (bby)<\/p>",
