Prosecutors seek 10 years for Marriott bomber<\/p>\n

The prosecution is seeking a 10-year jail sentence for Muhammad
\nRais for his alleged involvement in the JW Marriott Hotel bombing
\non Aug. 12, 2003.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Andi Herman told the South Jakarta District Court
\non Tuesday that Rais was guilty of involvement in the bombing,
\nwhich terrorized the public.<\/p>\n
In his indictment, the prosecutor said the defendant was fully
\nresponsible for his actions, which resulted in the deaths of 12
\npeople, including the bomber, with 147 others injured.<\/p>\n
In mitigation, the prosecutor said the defendant admitted his
\nguilt and had expressed remorse.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Johanes Ether Binti adjourned the trial until
\nnext week to hear defense arguments.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the same court delayed the opening hearing in the
\ntrial of another defendant in the Marriott bombing.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Tubagus Arief Aziz told the court that the
\ndefendant, Joni Hendrawan, alias Idris, alias Gembrot, was unable
\nto appear in court because he was being treated for back pain at
\nPertamina Hospital. Idris is being detained at the Jakarta Police
\nHeadquarters.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Asnawati adjourned the trial until next week.<\/p>\n
Tubagus told reporters that the defendant was also being
\ncharged with helping to assemble the bombs used in the Bali
\nterrorist attack in October 2000.<\/p>\n
In the Marriott case, Idris is alleged to have transported
\nthe explosives used in the bombing from Pekanbaru, Riau, to
\nBengkulu and then to Jakarta in August 2003.<\/p>\n
Tubagus said Idris was being charged under Law No. 15\/2003 on
\nterrorism, which carries a maximum sentence of death.<\/p>\n
He said prosecutors had secured statements from 100 witnesses,
\nincluding Imam Samudra, Amrozi and Mukhlas, who have been
\nsentenced to death for their roles in the Bali bombings.<\/p>",
