        "content": "<p>Jakarta, VIVA - Prof Suparji Ahmad, Professor of Law at Universitas\nAl Azhar Indonesia, considers the public prosecutor\u2019s (JPU) steps in\nprosecuting the defendants in the alleged corruption case of Chromebook\nprocurement to be appropriate. According to Suparji, the prosecution is\nbased on the respective roles of each party involved in the project that\nis suspected to have harmed state finances. He emphasised that legal\naccountability cannot be refuted merely through statements but must be\nassessed based on the evidence presented in court. It is known that\nthere are four defendants in this case: former Minister of Education,\nCulture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim, former consultant to\nthe Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ibrahim\nArief alias Ibam, former Director of SMP Mulyatsyah, and former Director\nof SD Sri Wahyuningsih. \u201cIn this context, the prosecutors are correct in\ndemanding accountability from the parties involved in the project that\nresulted in losses to state finances,\u201d said Suparji, quoted on Saturday,\n2 May 2026. He stressed that legal accountability must be adjusted to\nthe roles of each defendant, including Ibrahim Arief as a consultant.\nAccording to him, in the trial, objective evidence such as communication\nrecordings and digital documents is more reliable than mere oral\ndenials. \u201cDigital evidence like chats and records of meetings is what\nthe public and judges must trust, because it is difficult to fabricate,\u201d\nhe stated. Suparji also emphasised that the assessment of legal facts\ncannot be based solely on alibis but must consider the entire chain of\nevents. \u201cDo not base it solely on alibis, but look at the related\nsequences of events that will become facts in the trial,\u201d he said.\nRegarding Ibrahim\u2019s role, Suparji considers the recommendation for\nChromebook procurement to be an important fact. He stated that without\nthat recommendation, the project suspected of harming the state would\nlikely not have occurred. \u201cIf there was no such recommendation, that\nwork would not exist,\u201d he said. He added that the recommendation\npotentially fulfils the elements of an unlawful act because it is\nsuspected of enriching oneself, others, or a corporation to the\ndetriment of state finances. Furthermore, Suparji believes there needs\nto be further investigation into whether the recommendation was\nindependent or merely a formal legitimisation to justify the project.\nBecause if it is only justificatory, it could aggravate Ibrahim\u2019s legal\nresponsibility. \u201cThe independence and objectivity of the consultant are\nkey. If that is absent, the prosecutors\u2019 legal construction becomes even\nstronger,\u201d he said.<\/p>",
