Prosecutor loses her cool in court<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A female prosecutor broke into tears following a
\nheated quarrel with lawyers at the West Jakarta District Court on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Rachmatiah cried when some of the 11 lawyers from
\nthe Legal Aid Post (Posbakum) at the district court barked at her
\nshortly after Judge Bay Mastur closed the trial of a violent
\ntheft case against the lawyers' client.<\/p>\n
Rachmatiah, who was the only prosecutor in the case, cried
\nagain when she explained the case to reporters a few minutes
\nlater.<\/p>\n
She said the Posbakum lawyers had no right to defend
\nSugiantoro al Mashar, since none of them appeared in the first
\ntwo sessions of the case which had to be adjourned due to the
\nabsence of both defendant and lawyers.<\/p>\n
\"They showed the letter of authority from the defendant just
\ntoday,\" Rachmatiah told reporters with tears in her eyes.<\/p>\n
Without the presence of the lawyers, the court can usually end
\nthe trial and sentence the defendant in the second or third
\nsession, she said.<\/p>\n
Rachmatiah also condemned the other Posbakum lawyers who
\nyelled and pointed their fingers to her to show their anger.<\/p>\n
\"They are not part of the defendant's legal team... but why
\ndid they also blame me?\" she said.<\/p>\n
Several court staff members later came by and comforted her.<\/p>\n
The defendant was accompanied by only three of the lawyers.<\/p>\n
One of the lawyers, Rachmat Nainggolan, said that Rachmatiah
\nclaimed they were unable to defend their client on the grounds
\nthat they did not notify the prosecutor in advance.<\/p>\n
\"I never found such a law that stipulates a lawyer must inform
\na prosecutor on the matter before the trial is held,\" Rachmat
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Her accusation, he said, \"insulted the legal profession\".
