Prosecutor demands death sentence for JSX bombing suspect<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): An auto repair shop owner is facing a possible
\ndeath sentence for allegedly masterminding last year's bombing of
\nthe Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSX) building, which killed 10 people
\nand injured 46 others.<\/p>\n
The sentence request was presented on Monday by prosecutor
\nEndang Rachwan during the trial of Tengku Ismuhadi Jafar, 30, and
\nhis employee Nuryadin, alias Nadin, 29, in South Jakarta District
\nCourt.<\/p>\n
Nuryadin, who escaped from prison last month, is facing a
\npossible life sentence for assembling and delivering the bomb to
\nthe JSX building.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor told the court, which was presided over by
\njudge Rusman Dhani Achmad, that the defendants had violated
\nArticle 1 paragraph 1 of Emergency Law No. 12\/1951 for possessing
\nand using ammunitions or explosive material.<\/p>\n
That the defendants had ruined national stability, caused
\npublic disorder and had given conflicting statements were some
\nfactors which strengthened the sentence request, according to the
\nprosecutor.<\/p>\n
Jafar, who looked calm during the trial, said that basically
\nthere was nothing he could do but leave the decision to the
\njudges.<\/p>\n
However, he insisted that he was not involved in the JSX
\nbombing and that he rejected the sentence.<\/p>\n
When asked about the death sentence demand, Jafar remarked,
\n\"Everyone is afraid to face death, but if the judges decide so,
\nis there anything I can do?\"<\/p>\n
The JSX bombing, which took place on Sept. 13, 2000 shocked
\nthe public, since it happened in the national financial center.
\nThe rupiah weakened against the dollar afterward, reaching Rp
\n11,000 from a previous Rp 9,000.<\/p>\n
According to the prosecutor, on Sept. 12 the defendant
\nwithdrew Rp 200 million from the Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta,
\nbranch of Bank BNI to buy dollars.<\/p>\n
High explosive bombs, which contained TNT (trinitrotoluene)
\nand RDX (cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine), were used in the JSX
\nbuilding blast, according to the prosecutor.<\/p>\n
Jafar, the owner of Krung Baro auto repair shop in Ciganjur,
\nSouth Jakarta and Nuryadin, allegedly committed the JSX bombing
\nalong with at least six other alleged accomplices, namely,
\nIbrahim Abdul Wahab, Ibrahim Hasan, Irwan, Sayed Mustofa, Tengku
\nRayang Rayang and Zulfkifli.<\/p>\n
Ibrahim Abdul Wahab escaped jail in February while Ibrahim
\nHasan, a member of the Army's Strategic Reserves Command
\n(Kostrad), managed to escape in July.<\/p>\n
Two other defendants, Nuryadin and a member of the Army's
\nSpecial Force (Kopassus) Chief Sgt. Irwan, tried to escape from
\nCipinang Penitentiary in East Jakarta on July, 28. Nuryadin held
\na guard at gunpoint with a grenade in his hand, while the other
\nsuspect also held a grenade. However, only Nuryadin managed to
\nget away, while Irwan was arrested.<\/p>\n
The case will be adjourned until next Monday to hear the
\ndefense from both the defendant and his lawyer, Paskalis Pieter.
