        "content": "<p>Proposal on religion<\/p>\n<p>From Kompas<\/p>\n<p>President Soeharto's recent statement on the need to hold<br>\nperiodic meetings with elders of the various religions in<br>\nIndonesia, is a laudable proposal. Especially since the people of<br>\nIndonesia highly respect religious norms, as reflected in the<br>\nfirst principle of Pancasila.<\/p>\n<p>A degradation of religious values could see misunderstanding<br>\nof the first principle. Being a citizen loyal to Pancasila, I<br>\nhope very much the President's statement will soon be realized.<br>\nIt should be institutionalized, if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Such meetings, however, should not be held in Jakarta alone.<br>\nThey should be introduced at village level too. Meetings of the<br>\nvarious religious elders in villages are essential because of the<br>\nauthorities' influence on the people.
