Promoting children's books<\/p>\n
I have just returned from an extensive trip to Indonesia,
\nMalaysia and Singapore. My purpose in being in Indonesia was to
\nassist Dr. Murti Bunanta in giving workshops related to
\nstorytelling, children's books and reading.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is home to persons of Islamic, Christian, Hindu and
\nBuddhist beliefs. All of these religions use parables, stories or
\nhadith, to teach simple truths of life. I was already familiar
\nwith many Indonesian stories, but I found many new ones, and
\ndiscovered that there are still very good storytellers in
\nIndonesia. You should do all you can to promote this rich
\nheritage.<\/p>\n
I would especially like to commend the work of Dr. Murti
\nBunanta and her organization. They are doing such remarkable work
\nin trying to promote the cause of good oral and written
\nliterature for children in Indonesia. She and Suryadi (Pak Raden)
\ndeserve medals for their devotion to this cause, which is so
\nimportant to Indonesia's future.<\/p>\n
