        "content": "<p>Promote your reading!<\/p>\n<p>I am writing in reference to the article Libraries widely<br>\nmisperceived in Indonesia (May 21). I would like to comment that<br>\npeople need to develop their skills by reading a lot about their<br>\nown professional interest or interests. I, for one, always<br>\npromote the need to read or write.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps one of the most well known handicaps is the language.<br>\nWhen I taught at a senior high school in Pondok Indah in 1984, I<br>\nused the direct method of teaching English. My pupils were free<br>\nto ask questions after testing them on a particular subject such<br>\nas \"prepositions\", one of the most difficult parts of the English<br>\nlanguage. The methodical system of multiple choice should be<br>\nbanned since it doesn't give the students the chance to think and<br>\ncomprehend.<\/p>\n<p>Why don't teachers teach the usage of English? This should be<br>\nstressed in schools so students can master the language by<br>\ncompleting assignments such as essays twice a week. Another<br>\naspect which has been ignored is speaking skills. This includes<br>\nthe right pronunciation, accent and phrasing.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to Indonesian, the teaching of this bahasa<br>\nnasional is also ineffective at schools. A large number of<br>\nstudents, not to mention most newspaper and magazine reporters<br>\nare poor in using the language. How can an Indonesian citizen<br>\nignore his own national language?<\/p>\n<p>It is important to read to stop typical errors from occurring<br>\nsuch as the misuse of the words sewenang-wenang and semena-mena.<br>\nMany people don't know the two words have different meanings. The<br>\nformer means \"arbitrary\" while the latter must be proceeded by<br>\ntidak (not) to mean \"unfashionable\".<\/p>\n<p>I think libraries should be used as an informal place to study<br>\nand educate oneself in as many ways as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Reading should be promoted in schools as well as universities;<br>\nnot only to the students but also to the teachers and lecturers.<br>\nYou do not live on bread alone.
