Projects under Agum Gumelar<\/p>\n
A number of projects at the transportation ministry -- from
\nthe expansion of the Juanda airport to port constructions -- have
\ncome under the spotlight of some inquisitive circles. These
\nprojects have raised questions because of the lack of
\ntransparency surrounding them, or owing to some other reasons.<\/p>\n
Many interest groups have reportedly profited from projects at
\nthe ministry. The Juanda airport project and the construction of
\nports cost billions to trillions of rupiah.<\/p>\n
The ministry was at one time included on the list of
\nministries with the largest number of financial irregularities.
\nHence, our suspicion that projects at this ministry have been
\ngood business for some interested parties.<\/p>\n
We are turning our spotlight on the handling of projects at
\nthe ministry to ensure that everything will really come to light,
\nespecially because the minister himself once said that projects
\ncontrolled by his office were very complicated matters. Those
\nallegedly involved in turning these projects into their own
\nbusinesses are not only professional private circles but,
\nallegedly, also certain officials who always claim to defend the
\npublic's interests.<\/p>\n
To ensure that no irregularities occur in the projects at the
\nministry, it is not too late for the top echelons of the ministry
\nto introduce clear rules of the game, and prioritize transparency
\nand fairness. If the rules can be implemented indiscriminately,
\nthe minister and his immediate subordinates will no longer have
\nany need to feel hesitant or even afraid in the face of external
\npressure.<\/p>\n
