Project for skilled workers launched<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration launched on Monday a
\nlabor-intensive project worth more than Rp 60 billion (US$5.45
\nmillion) for skilled workers to help ease unemployment problems
\nin the capital.<\/p>\n
Djailani, deputy governor for welfare affairs, said after
\nwitnessing the launch that the project, run jointly with 114 non-
\ngovernmental organizations, was designed to employ over 10,000
\njobless people.<\/p>\n
Djailani warmly hailed the project because he said it would
\nhelp ease the rising unemployment caused by the numerous
\nbankruptcies due to the current monetary crisis.<\/p>\n
\"This project is expected to help create young entrepreneurs,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
He said that unemployment in the capital had increased from
\n747,760 in June 1997 to 825,000 this month.<\/p>\n
Sabar Sianturi, the chief of the Jakarta manpower ministry
\noffice, said at the ceremony that skilled workers trained in the
\neight-month project would be paid.<\/p>\n
He said that the workers would be employed with a monthly wage
\nof Rp 300,000 each.<\/p>\n
\"After the training course, the workers will be expected to
\nrun their own businesses,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that the project gave priority to recruiting newly
\ndismissed workers.<\/p>\n
Business activities to be included in the projects include
\nagribusiness, fisheries, food and leather, handicraft industries,
\nretailing, restaurants, minidepartment stores, photo copy
\noutlets, salons and photography studios.<\/p>\n
The administration is currently carrying out a labor-intensive
\nscheme worth Rp 17.4 billion to employ about 30,000 unskilled
