        "content": "<p>Profile of members of the new cabinet<\/p>\n<p>Feisal Tanjung, Coordinating Minister for Defense and Security:<\/p>\n<p>The former Armed Forces chief takes on the role left vacant<br>\nsince December following the death of Soesilo Soedarman.<\/p>\n<p>Born June 17, 1939, in Tarutung, North Sumatra, Feisal entered<br>\nthe military academy in 1958.<\/p>\n<p>His military education includes training at the Fuhrungs<br>\nAkademie der Bunderwehr in Germany and the International Defense<br>\nManagement Course in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Ginandjar Kartasasmita, Coordinating Minister for Economy,<br>\nFinance and Industry\/Chairman of the National Development<br>\nPlanning Board:<\/p>\n<p>A long and trusted assistant of the President. Ginandjar first<br>\nheld a cabinet post in 1983, when he was appointed junior<br>\nminister for the promotion of domestically made products.<\/p>\n<p>He retains his post as chairman of the National Development<br>\nPlanning Board, which he held in the last cabinet, together with<br>\nthe added responsibility of coordinating minister.<\/p>\n<p>The retired air Marshall is a graduate of Tokyo University of<br>\nAgriculture and Technology, where he studied chemical<br>\nengineering.<\/p>\n<p>Hartarto Sastrosoenarto, Coordinating Minister for Development<br>\nSupervisory and State Administrative Reforms:<\/p>\n<p>The baritone-voiced graduate of the University of New South<br>\nWales, Australia, is once again given an important coordinating<br>\nministry after handling production and distribution in the<br>\nprevious cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Working his way up the ladder at the Ministry of Industry,<br>\nHartarto, 65, was appointed its minister in 1983, and he is now,<br>\nalong with Ginandjar, one of the longest-serving members of the<br>\ncabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Haryono Suyono, Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare and<br>\nPoverty Alleviation\/Chairman of Family Planning Coordinating<br>\nBoard:<\/p>\n<p>Long known as a proponent of Indonesia's family planning<br>\nprogram, Haryono, 59, received one of the nation's highest award,<br>\nthe Mahaputra medal, for his work in this field.<\/p>\n<p>Such was his passion for the family planning program that he<br>\nonce had his license plate customized to B-2KB, the program's<br>\nIndonesian initials.<\/p>\n<p>He retains his post as the National Family Planning Board<br>\nchairman.<\/p>\n<p>Haryono studied in the United States, receiving a master's and<br>\ndoctorate from Chicago University.<\/p>\n<p>Hartono, Minister of Home Affairs:<\/p>\n<p>Hartono was the new kid on the block in the last cabinet as he<br>\nwas only appointed minister of information in June.<\/p>\n<p>Born on June 10, 1941, in Pamekasan, Madura, Hartono's last<br>\nmilitary post before retiring was as Army chief.<\/p>\n<p>Ali Alatas, Minister of Foreign Affairs:<\/p>\n<p>One of the best well-known ministers both at home and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Alatas joins the illustrious ranks of people like minister of<br>\nfinance Ali Wardhana, former minister of information Harmoko, and<br>\nformer state minister of research and technology B.J. Habibie in<br>\nbeing appointed to the same cabinet post three times.<\/p>\n<p>Known for his negotiating skills and oratory eloquence,<br>\nAlatas, 65, is a career diplomat who actually began his<br>\nprofessional life as a journalist.<\/p>\n<p>A heart attack during his last term forced him to slow his<br>\npace somewhat, but did nothing to affect his vigor.<\/p>\n<p>Gen. Wiranto, Minister of Defense\/Armed Forces Commander:<\/p>\n<p>In the past four years, Wiranto's career has continued a<br>\nconsistent ascent as he has held one important post after<br>\nanother, starting with Jakarta Military commander in 1995,<br>\ncommander of the Army's Strategic Reserve a year later, then Army<br>\nchief last year. He was promoted to Armed Forces commander last<br>\nmonth.<\/p>\n<p>Wiranto, 51, has also served as the president's adjutant.<\/p>\n<p>Muladi, Minister of Justice:<\/p>\n<p>Rector of Diponegoro University in Semarang, Central Java.<br>\nMuladi is a sought-after commentator on legal-political affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The tables will be turned now that he is a cabinet minister.<\/p>\n<p>Born on May 26, 1943, in Surakarta, Central Java, Muladi is<br>\nmarried with four daughters.<\/p>\n<p>Muhammad Alwi Dahlan, Minister of Information:<\/p>\n<p>Alwi has made issues revolving around information and<br>\ncommunication a central part of his life.<\/p>\n<p>His doctorate dissertation at the University of Illinois in<br>\n1967 was titled Anonymous Disclosure of Government Information as<br>\na Form of Political Communication.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Padang, West Sumatra, Alwi, 64, is a regular lecturer<br>\non communication studies at the University of Indonesia. Since<br>\n1979, he has also served as an advisor to the state minister of<br>\nenvironment.<\/p>\n<p>Fuad Bawazier, Minister of Finance:<\/p>\n<p>Born in Tegal, on Aug. 22, 1949, Fuad rose in the ranks of the<br>\nMinistry of Finance and was considered successful in his last<br>\npost as the director general of taxation.<\/p>\n<p>His academic credentials include an economics degree from<br>\nGadjah Mada University, a master's degree from Williams College<br>\nin the U.S. and a doctorate in economics from the University of<br>\nMaryland.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamad Hasan, Minister of Trade and Industry:<\/p>\n<p>An regular golf partner of President Soeharto, Mohamad Hasan<br>\nis dubbed as Indonesia's timber king for extensive companies in<br>\nthe timber business.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamad, or Bob as he is better known, will be 67 on March 24.<\/p>\n<p>He has many business positions, including as commissioner of<br>\nseveral banks, and he chairs several industry councils, such as<br>\nthe Association of Indonesian Wood Panel Producers and the<br>\nIndonesian Forestry Society.<\/p>\n<p>Justika Sjarifudin Baharsjah, Minister of Agriculture:<\/p>\n<p>Wife of the former minister of agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>Justika, 60, received a master's degree from the University of<br>\nKentucky in 1964 and later went on to earn her doctorate at the<br>\nBogor Institute of Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>The grandmother of two still actively teaches in several<br>\nuniversities.<\/p>\n<p>Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, Minister of Mines and Energy:<\/p>\n<p>Best known for his work as president of state-owned PT Tambang<br>\nBatubara Bukit Asam and later PT Tambang Timah in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>He also served as director general for public mining.<\/p>\n<p>Kuntoro received his engineering degrees at the Bandung<br>\nInstitute of Technology and Stanford University.<\/p>\n<p>Sumahadi, Minister of Forestry and Plantation:<\/p>\n<p>Formerly the director general for inventorization and forest<br>\nutilization, Sumahadi, 55, is known to be a loyal servant of the<br>\nMinistry of Forestry.<\/p>\n<p>He received a graduate degree in forestry studies from Gadjah<br>\nMada University and later went to the Philippines to earn a<br>\nmaster's in business administration.<\/p>\n<p>Rachmadi Bambang Sumadhijo, Minister of Public Works:<\/p>\n<p>Rachmadi is another senior official who was promoted. Born in Cilacap,<br>\nWest Java, on Aug. 30, 1944, Subiakto is well experienced in<br>\ncooperative affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this post, he was director general of cooperatives<br>\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n<p>Theo L. Sambuaga, Minister of Manpower:<\/p>\n<p>A well-known figure with high visibility as a Golkar<br>\nlegislator. As a professional politician, Theo, 49, has been<br>\nactive since his youth in various organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Married with two children, Theo is currently chairman of the<br>\nGolkar faction at the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>A.M. Hendro Priyono, Minister of Transmigration:<\/p>\n<p>An active lieutenant-general who from 1993 to 1994 was chief<br>\nof the Jakarta Military Command.<\/p>\n<p>He added Abdullah Mahmud to the front of his original name<br>\nafter returning from a haj pilgrimage in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>Born on May 7, 1945 in Yogyakarta, Hendropriyono is married to<br>\nTuti Mulia. They have three children.<\/p>\n<p>Wiranto Arismunandar, Minister of Education and Culture:<\/p>\n<p>Wiranto is the older brother of Wismoyo, a former Army chief.<br>\nWhile his brother pursued a military career, Wiranto studied the<br>\nsciences, particularly the area of technical engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Wiranto, 64, has written several books and hundreds of<br>\nscientific papers.<\/p>\n<p>His last post was rector of the renowned Bandung Institute of<br>\nTechnology.<\/p>\n<p>Farid Anfasa Moeloek, Minister of Health:<\/p>\n<p>A gynecologist, Moeloek is known as one of the preeminent<br>\nexperts in this field.<\/p>\n<p>Before his appointment, he was director of the post-graduate<br>\nprogram at the University of Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Quraish Shihab, Minister of Religious Affairs:<\/p>\n<p>Spent 25 years of his life in Cairo, Egypt, immersed in<br>\nreligious studies. He started at the high school level and left<br>\nthere in 1983, after earning his doctorate from Al-Azhar<br>\nUniversity.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, he has been active in the Association of<br>\nIndonesian Moslem Intellectuals (ICMI) where he is an assistant<br>\nto the ICMI chairman.<\/p>\n<p>Shihab, 52, also serves on the board of several Islamically<br>\ninclined publications.<\/p>\n<p>He is currently rector of the state-run Syariff Hidayatullah<br>\nIslamic Teaching Institute here.<\/p>\n<p>Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana, Minister of Social Affairs:<\/p>\n<p>Everyone knows her as President Soeharto's eldest daughter.<br>\nBut in recent years the mother of three has been making a name<br>\nfor herself, either by way of her own private business ventures,<br>\nher role in the Golkar executive or in various social<br>\norganizations, including the Indonesian Red Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Her businesses include PT Cipta Lamtoro Gung Persada and<br>\nprivate TV station Televisi Pendidikan Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>She has also taken a key role in solidifying people-to-people<br>\ncontact between the nation and Portugal as chair of the Portugal-<br>\nIndonesia Friendship Association.<\/p>\n<p>She is currently serving her second five-year term as a member<br>\nof the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR).<\/p>\n<p>Saadilah Mursyid, Minister\/State Secretary:<\/p>\n<p>Saadilah, 60, was formerly state minister\/cabinet secretary<br>\nand prior to that served as junior minister for the cabinet<br>\nsecretary.<\/p>\n<p>He has a graduate degree in public administration from Harvard<br>\nUniversity.<\/p>\n<p>Rahardi Ramelan, State Minister of Research and Technology:<\/p>\n<p>A former Air Force captain, Rahardi is known as a loyal<br>\nassistant at the National Development Planning Board, in addition<br>\nto his work at the Ministry of Research and Technology.<\/p>\n<p>He graduated from Czechoslovakia University's engineering<br>\nschool.<\/p>\n<p>He has also worked closely with Habibie since 1975, when the<br>\ntwo together set up the Advanced Technology division at the<br>\nstate-owned Pertamina company.<\/p>\n<p>Sanyoto Sastrowardoyo, State Minister of Investment\/Chairman for<br>\nInvestment Coordinating Board:<\/p>\n<p>Sanyoto, 62, will be serving his second term as state minister<br>\nfor investment. Born in Purworkerto, Central Java, Sanyoto earned<br>\na master's degree in 1962 from the Syracuse University, New York.<\/p>\n<p>Ary Mardjono, State Minister of Agrarian Affairs\/Chairman of the<br>\nNational Land Agency:<\/p>\n<p>A retired Army general who has been active in politics and was<br>\nuntil recently secretary-general of the Golkar central board.<\/p>\n<p>Ary, 62, has also served as an assistant to the state<br>\nsecretary since 1988.<\/p>\n<p>Akbar Tandjung, State Minister of Public Housing and Settlement:<\/p>\n<p>This is his second term responsible for public housing<br>\naffairs. Now he has added responsibility for settlement issues.<br>\nHe was also state minister of youth affairs and sports in<br>\n1988\/1993.<\/p>\n<p>Akbar, 53, is a leading Golkar figure, having served as deputy<br>\nsecretary-general in 1983\/1987.<\/p>\n<p>Juwono Sudarsono, State Minister of Environment\/Chairman of<br>\nEnvironmental Control Agency:<\/p>\n<p>Juwono, 56, is one of the most respected political scientists<br>\nin the country. However, most, if not all, of his highly regarded<br>\nworks and commentary have been in the political and international<br>\naffairs spheres rather than those directly concerning<br>\nenvironmental issues.<\/p>\n<p>He completed his graduate studies at University of California,<br>\nBerkeley, and later earned his doctorate at the London School of<br>\nEconomics and Political Science, with a dissertation on U.S.-<br>\nIndonesia relations.<\/p>\n<p>Juwono was head of the University of Indonesia's school of<br>\nsocial and political studies. More recently, he was deputy<br>\ngovernor of the National Resilience Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Haryanto Dhanutirto, State Minister of Food, Drugs and<br>\nHorticulture:<\/p>\n<p>The former minister of transportation begins his second term<br>\nin the cabinet, taking over a different portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>But this should not be a foreign subject of study for him as<br>\nhis training was in chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>Haryanto, 58, is no stranger to the political environment,<br>\nhaving served as a legislator since the early 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Tanri Abeng, State Minister of Empowerment of State Enterprises:<\/p>\n<p>Publicly regarded as one of the most successful managers in<br>\nIndonesia, Tanri, 56, was president of PT Bakrie &amp; Brothers.<\/p>\n<p>After receiving his MBA from State University of New York,<br>\nBuffalo, in 1968, Tanri built his reputation working at several<br>\ncompanies, among them PT Union Carbide Indonesia and PT Multi<br>\nBintang Indonesia. He is also on the board of directors or<br>\ncommissioner of various companies, including serving as president<br>\ncommissioner of the Indonesian Stock Exchange.<\/p>\n<p>He joins the ranks of people like Abdul Latief, who has moved<br>\nfrom being a successful businessman into the government.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, he was appointed by President Soeharto as deputy<br>\nsecretary-general of the Economic and Financial Resilience<br>\nCouncil.<\/p>\n<p>Tutty Alawiyah, State Minister of Women's Affairs:<\/p>\n<p>Famous as a passionate and eloquent preacher, Tutty, 55, spent<br>\nmost of her academic background in Islamic religious schools.<\/p>\n<p>She holds active prayer groups each week and also has a post<br>\non the advisory board of the Association of Indonesian Moslem<br>\nIntellectuals.<\/p>\n<p>Agung Laksono, State Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs:<\/p>\n<p>President director of AN-teve, a private television station. A<br>\ndoctorate degree-holder from Pittsburgh University, he was<br>\nchairman of various organizations, including the Association of<br>\nYoung Indonesian Businessmen and the Young Renewal Generation of<br>\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Soedjono C. Atmonegoro, Attorney General:<\/p>\n<p>Soedjono was formerly junior attorney general. He has gone up<br>\nthrough the ranks of the Indonesian justice system and previously<br>\nheld the position of vice attorney general.<\/p>\n<p>Sjahril Sabirin, Governor of Bank Indonesia:<\/p>\n<p>Appointed last month in a much speculated move, Sabirin<br>\nreplaced Soedrajad Djiwandono as governor of Bank Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>The Gadjah Mada University graduate is known as an \"inside<br>\nman\", having risen in the ranks of the central bank.<\/p>\n<p>He was born in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, on Oct. 14, 1943.<\/p>",
