The professors and intellectuals stressed that the student movement\nis an inseparable part of the nation\u2019s history of struggle, describing\nstudents as courageous agents of change who voice truth and justice.\nThey argued that the current situation makes the student voice a hope\nthat cannot be silenced, especially as crucial issues such as economic\ninequality, environmental destruction, and the weakening of critical\nvoices are being ignored.<\/p>\n
They firmly condemned any efforts to undermine, suppress, or\nintimidate students, stating that freedom of expression and association\nare constitutional rights that must not be violated under any pretext.\nThe forum urged the government and higher education institutions to open\nthe widest possible space for student participation in the democratic\nprocess, rather than becoming instruments of silencing. They also\nreminded the educated class of their moral responsibility not to remain\nsilent in the classroom when democracy is under threat, pledging active\nsolidarity with the student movement.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Advocacy Team of the Anti-Criminalisation Network,\ncomprising LBH Surabaya and KontraS Surabaya, recorded that the number\nof protesters from the \u2018Indonesia Sekarat\u2019 rally detained by Surabaya\nPolice had risen to 24, including one woman. They remained in custody\nand were being questioned at Surabaya Police Headquarters as of Saturday\nevening. LBH Surabaya also received information that two of the\ndetainees were suspected of being processed for narcotics offences,\nwhile some others were being investigated for alleged vandalism but were\nnot being detained. The remaining participants were scheduled to be\nreleased after questioning.<\/p>\n
Surabaya Police Chief Commissioner Luthfie Sulistiawan stated that\nhis officers had secured a number of individuals from the demonstration\nnear the Grahadi State Building on Friday night. He said the total\nnumber of detainees was still being counted, but estimated it to be in\nthe dozens.
