ProFauna saves Aceh animals<\/p>\n

Dozens of humanitarian aid groups have visited Aceh to help
\ntsunami survivors, now ProFauna wants to do the same for the
\nprovince's animals.<\/p>\n
The Surabaya-based group sent a team of six veterinarians to
\nBanda Aceh a week ago to help save protected animals in the
\nprovince.<\/p>\n
Team coordinator Luki Kusuma Wardhani said animals, especially
\nprotected ones, had to be cared for after a disaster otherwise
\nthey could catch any number of diseases, including rabies.<\/p>\n
Luki said the team had worked on several different types of
\nprotected animals in Banda Aceh, including a turtle, short-tailed
\nmacaque and a python.<\/p>\n
The team also has treated hundreds of pets and animals
\nabandoned by their owners after the tsunami for fear that they
\ncould spread communicable disease such as rabies.<\/p>\n
The animals, including dogs, cats and goats, wandered the
\nstreets of Banda Aceh looking for food wherever they could find
\nit.<\/p>\n
The team brought medical supplies with them to treat the
\nanimals. The domestic animals were released after being treated,
\nbut the protected animals were sent to an animal quarantine
\ncenter at the Medan Orangutan Conservation Center in North
\nSumatra, said Luki.<\/p>\n
