Productivity boosting widely misunderstood<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The idea of improving productivity has been
\nwidely misunderstood by companies in Indonesia, says a
\nbusinessmen.<\/p>\n
Vice Chairman of the Supervising Board of Strategic Industries
\n(BPIS) Giri S. Hadihardjono said that companies have introduced
\nvarious modern and sophisticated equipment thinking that they
\ncould quickly improve their workers' productivity.<\/p>\n
\"But, unfortunately, that target cannot be fully achieved,\"
\nGiri said at a seminar to discuss productivity enhancement.<\/p>\n
\"In many cases, the investment even backfires resulting in
\nlower productivity because the purchase of the new equipment is
\nnot accompanied by a higher volume of work.\"<\/p>\n
The equipment eventually becomes idle and unused, he added.<\/p>\n
Other speakers during the seminar which was jointly organized
\nby the Ministry of Manpower and the Pan Asia Research and
\nCommunication Services, had earlier suggested that productivity
\nis an acquired culture which can only evolve over time.<\/p>\n
Giri said the introduction of computers at companies provides
\na striking illustration for his point.<\/p>\n
Many companies have invested heavily in computer equipment but
\nthe sophisticated programs installed remain largely unused since
\nmost companies only used the computers for word processing
\npurposes.<\/p>\n
Realizing their mistake, companies then began hiring foreign
\nconsultants to give an overview of their operating system and
\norganization with a view to enhancing their productivity.<\/p>\n
\"Such a situation makes Indonesia 'a fertile ground' for
\nforeign consultants to operate,\" Giri said.<\/p>\n
He warned that resorting to foreign consultants very often did
\nnot lead to a satisfactory outcome because their suggestions were
\nmostly unworkable.<\/p>\n
Giri agreed that Indonesia must act now to improve the
\nproductivity of its workers.<\/p>\n
Any lingering doubts in the minds of foreign investors could
\npush them to turn to other countries, he said.<\/p>\n
He proposed a more comprehensive way of looking at enhancing
\nproductivity.<\/p>\n
\"The time has come for the country to develop a new approach
\nthat should be deployed to improve its productivity,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that not only the government but all sides or groups
\nin the country are responsible for making endeavors to enhance
\nthe national productivity.<\/p>\n
\"Of the utmost importance is the commitment by all
\norganizations and leaders to consistently apply the new approach
\nto enhance the national productivity,\" he said. (rms)<\/p>",
