Probosutedjo in China<\/p>\n
BEIJING (AFP): The half brother of Indonesian President
\nSoeharto met yesterday with Chinese Vice Premier Wu Bangguo to
\ndiscuss the financial crisis which has wracked the Southeast
\nAsian region, the official Xinhua news agency said.<\/p>\n
Probosutedjo, described as "a well-known banker and
\nentrepreneur in Indonesia", said he was "impressed" by China's
\neconomic growth and stability in the face of the Asian financial
\nstorm.<\/p>\n
His visit was made amid increasing unrest in Indonesia and
\nresentment against the Chinese minority in the country gripped by
\nthe economic crisis.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's Chinese community which represents five million of
\nIndonesia's 200 million population, control a large part of the
\ncountry's commerce and economy.<\/p>\n
Wu said China's commitment not to devalue its local currency,
\nthe yuan, "supports other Southeast Asian economies."<\/p>\n
He said China was sympathetic to Indonesia's fiscal
\ndifficulties, adding Beijing has offered assistance within its
\ncapacity to Indonesia under a 40-billion dollar bailout deal put
\ntogether by the International Monetary Fund.<\/p>",
