        "content": "<p>Probo defends Soeharto's integrity<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Soeharto's half-brother Probosutedjo deplored<br>\nyesterday baseless allegations over the former president's<br>\nwealth, claiming Soeharto never used his power to enrich himself<br>\nor his children.<\/p>\n<p>The four foundations that Soeharto established were created<br>\nonly to help needy people and they used legal and open ways to<br>\ncollect donations from the public, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\"The criticism is not objective. It targets only the (former<br>\nleader's) family. The results of development are not enjoyed by<br>\nthe Cendana family only,\" said Probosutedjo in a media briefing<br>\nheld at Soeharto's residence on Jl. Cendana in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Soeharto had been scheduled to hold a media briefing to answer<br>\nallegations that he had amassed his wealth illegally, but called<br>\nit off at his children's request.<\/p>\n<p>Probosutedjo made it clear yesterday he was not speaking on<br>\nbehalf of the family of the fallen leader.<\/p>\n<p>\"The establishment of the foundations does not harm people or<br>\nthe state,\" said Probosutedjo, as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n<p>Probosutedjo, himself a successful businessman, disclosed<br>\nSoeharto's six children planned to end their business careers and<br>\nalso withdraw from politics.<\/p>\n<p>Probosutedjo said the children conducted their businesses in<br>\naccordance with the country's laws and their wealth was much<br>\nsmaller than that of other business tycoons.<\/p>\n<p>\"If compared with Eka Tjipta Widjaja (Sinar Mas Group) and<br>\nSjamsul Nursalim with his BDNI bank and Gajah Tunggal, they are<br>\nnothing,\" Probosutedjo said.<\/p>\n<p>Probosutedjo believed his nephews and nieces would not object<br>\nto resigning from the People's Consultative Assembly if they were<br>\nasked to leave the country's highest legislative institution.<\/p>\n<p>\"I think they would not mind, although I have not asked them<br>\ndirectly,\" Probosutedjo hinted.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that he would also quit the Assembly.
