        "content": "<p>Problem of garbage<\/p>\n<p>After a very relaxing weekend in Puncak, I returned to Jakarta<br>\nthankful for such simple pleasures as fresh air and exercise.<br>\nHowever, while walking through a beautifully manicured tea<br>\nplantation, I was saddened to see how much garbage was lying on<br>\nthe ground. There were discarded plastic bags, bottles, food<br>\nwrappings and aluminum cans as far as the eye could see.<\/p>\n<p>I am no authority on environmental issues, but it seems to me<br>\nthat such exposed, non-biodegradable waste material is harmful to<br>\nman and nature in at least three ways:<\/p>\n<p>* It contaminates both soil and crops.<\/p>\n<p>* It represents a health hazard due to the rotting food and<br>\ndirty containers.<\/p>\n<p>* It destroys the beauty and harmony of the areas.<\/p>\n<p>In order to prevent such areas from being overrun by garbage,<br>\nI would like to request the following: Could 1) local authorities<br>\nclean unsanitary areas and place garbage bins at convenient<br>\nlocations in the tea plantations; 2) workers, residents and<br>\nvisitors carry a bag to dispose of their garbage until they reach<br>\na garbage bin, instead of simply throwing it on the ground; 3)<br>\nthe press write a series on the hazards of uncollected non-<br>\nbiodegradable waste material, the importance of sorting and<br>\nrecycling it and the means currently used in Jakarta for waste<br>\ndisposal and recycling.<\/p>\n<p>I am particularly interested in knowing how households and<br>\nbusinesses can incorporate recycling into their day-to-day life.<br>\nI know there are bins outside Kemchicks Supermarket in Kemang for<br>\nrecycling glass, plastic water bottles and aluminum. Could more<br>\nof these be provided throughout the city, together with similar<br>\nbins for recycling newspapers, magazines, and plastic in general?<\/p>\n<p>Are there companies which collect and recycle waste paper from<br>\nbusinesses? It's frightening the amount of paper the smallest<br>\ncompany throws away in a day.<\/p>\n<p>I would appreciate any further information on these matters.<\/p>\n<p>Name and address<\/p>\n<p>withheld<\/p>",
