        "content": "<p>Probe into Ngawi incident sought<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: Lawyers representing the Ngawi Muslim Forum and the<br>\nCommunication Forum of Ahlul Sunnah Wal Jamaah, known as Laskar<br>\nJihad or Holy Warriors, lodged a complaint with the National<br>\nCommission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) on Friday seeking a<br>\nthorough investigation into alleged human rights violations by<br>\npolice in the so-called Ngawi incident.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyers, headed by M. Mahendradatta, told Komnas HAM that<br>\npolice arbitrarily arrested and intimidated activists and<br>\nsupporters of the Ngawi Muslim Forum and Laskar Jihad in<br>\nDecember.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We admit that there was no gross human rights violations in<br>\nthe incident, but human rights issues do not concern gross<br>\nviolations only, but also cover small violations stipulated in<br>\nLaw No. 5, 1998 on the Anti-Torture Convention,&quot; M. Mahendradatta<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyers were received by Komnas HAM member Soegiri.<\/p>\n<p>Riots broke out in Ngawi, East Java in mid-December after a<br>\ngroup of people, presumably supporters of President Megawati<br>\nSoekarnoputri&apos;s Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI<br>\nPerjuangan), attacked a house belonging to a Ngawi Muslim Forum<br>\nactivist and an office belonging to Laskar Jihad.<\/p>\n<p>The attacks were followed by the alleged arbitrary arrests by<br>\npolice of Ngawi residents and sympathizers of the Ngawi Muslim<br>\nForum. -- Antara<\/p>",
