Probe into Cikunir bus crash continues<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The police investigation into Sunday's Cakung-
\nCikunir toll road crash, which claimed the lives of 35 people, is
\ncontinuing and no suspects have been named.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang told The Jakarta
\nPost yesterday that detectives and forensic officers were still
\nin the process of collecting evidence and information to clarify
\nthe events leading up to the accident.<\/p>\n
\"We also still need more data and information from forensic
\nexperts at the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital and the
\nsurviving victims as well,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Police will question traffic experts from the toll road
\nmanagement company, PT Jasamarga, or the Public Work Office for
\ndetails on the road conditions and the collision, he said.<\/p>\n
\"The information is vital if we are to prove whether or
\nnot the ill-fated Jaya Bakti Super bus driver was the one
\nresponsible for the collision and the death of the passengers.\"<\/p>\n
The ongoing investigation of the collision -- between a bus,
\ndump truck and gas truck in East Jakarta -- was almost 60 percent
\ncompleted, he said.<\/p>\n
Blood test<\/p>\n
The bus driver, Riyadi Mulyono, reportedly exceeded the
\nmaximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour before the crash, which
\nkilled 35 people and hospitalized at least 15 others.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said the police received a report on Wednesday from
\nCipto's forensic experts about the blood test conducted on
\nRiyadi's remains.<\/p>\n
\"It stated that every cubic centimeter of Riyadi's blood
\ncontained 80 milligrams of alcohol,\" he said, a level which would
\nhave impaired Riyadi's driving.<\/p>\n
Preliminary inquiries have so far named Riyadi as the main
\nsuspect in the case, Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
Riyadi allegedly overtook the gas truck without even
\nconsidering the possibility that another vehicle may have been
\ncoming from the opposite direction, he said.<\/p>\n
\"When all the evidence proves his negligent actions were the
\nmain cause of the accident, the investigation on Riyadi will be
\nclosed because he is already dead and cannot be punished for what
\nhe has done.\"<\/p>\n
\"However, this cannot be used as an excuse for police to stop
\ntheir investigation now,\" he said. \"We will continue until
\neverything is clear,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The city's Land Transportation Control Agency has agreed to
\nreduce the maximum speed for motorists on the Cakung-Cikunir toll
\nroad from 100 kilometers per hour to 80 km\/h.<\/p>\n
\"The reduction will only apply to the Cakung-Cikunir toll road
\nbecause it is still a two lane road with no barriers in between,\"
