        "content": "<p>Probe into Bulog scandal to continue during recess<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): House of Representatives Speaker Akbar Tandjung<br>\nsaid on Thursday the special committee investigating two<br>\nfinancial scandals linked to President Abdurrahman Wahid could<br>\ncontinue its work during the House's month-long recess, which<br>\nbegins on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\"As long as the investigation does not hamper the legislators'<br>\nplanned visits to their respective constituencies, the probe may<br>\ncontinue so it can be completed this month,\" Akbar told a group<br>\nof students from the Bogor Institute of Agriculture at the House.<\/p>\n<p>Akbar also received a student group from Trisakti University<br>\nin West Jakarta. This group urged the special committee to be<br>\nfair and objective in its investigation of the two scandals,<br>\nwhich center on Abdurrahman's alleged role in the misuse of Rp 35<br>\nbillion (US$3.6 million) from the State Logistics Agency (Bulog)<br>\nand a $2 million donation from Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah<br>\nto the President.<\/p>\n<p>The students also met with the members of the special<br>\ncommittee and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI<br>\nPerjuangan) faction.<\/p>\n<p>Didi Supriyanto, deputy chairman of the special committee,<br>\nsaid the committee was committed to completing the investigation<br>\nas soon as possible, and would not accept a back-room deal to<br>\nfreeze the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\"There will be no political deals behind this investigation,<br>\nbecause the House is determined to exercise its right to seek the<br>\ntruth in the two scandals,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the House could ask the People's Consultative<br>\nAssembly to hold a special session to impeach the President if he<br>\nwas found guilty in the two scandals.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the special committee Bachtiar Chamsyah of the<br>\nUnited Development Party (PPP) faction said the special committee<br>\nmembers would go to the State Palace to question the President<br>\nand to the City Police's detention center where the main suspect<br>\nand Gus Dur's masseur Suwondo is being held.<\/p>\n<p>Bachtiar said the special committee would seek a clarification<br>\nfrom the President over former National Police chief Gen.<br>\nRusdihardjo's recent testimony, while Suwondo would be<br>\ninterrogated over the President's knowledge about the scandal.<br>\n(rms)<\/p>",
