Probe into alleged rape to go on: Aritonang<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A senior police officer has assured relatives of
\nthe late Cong Fung Moi, reportedly raped by a Thai monk, that
\ndetectives would continue to investigate the allegation even
\nthough the victim had died.<\/p>\n
City Police Spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said yesterday the
\ninvestigation would be officially closed only if no evidence was
\nfound to substantiate the claim.<\/p>\n
\"The same procedures as usual will be applied to the rape
\nallegation filed recently by Cong even though she is dead,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Cong committed suicide at her house in Jelambar, West Jakarta,
\nTuesday night by drinking a pesticide.<\/p>\n
It is thought she decided to end her life because she was so
\nupset by the police questioning her as a suspect for allegedly
\ndefaming the Thai's name.<\/p>\n
She was frustrated by the slow pace of the police
\ninvestigation into her report, which she first filed last July,
\naccording to her brother, Sugandani.<\/p>\n
He said Cong drank the poisonous pesticide while the officers
\nfrom the Central Jakarta precinct were still in the house.<\/p>\n
\"The officers came to pick up my sister. She was reported by a
\nman for defaming his name,\" he said Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Sugandani told reporters Cong was a rape victim. She had
\nreported the man, a Thai monk in his 50s identified only as Th,
\nfor sexually abusing her last July in Bandung.<\/p>\n
He said Cong reported her allegation to the police and also
\nsent letters about it to several institutions, including the
\nIndonesian Buddhist Council.<\/p>\n
\"I think she took the fatal decision because she was helpless
\nand thought that she would never get help from the institutions,\"
\nsaid Sugandani.<\/p>\n
Aritonang, however, rejected the allegation the police had
\nignored Cong's report.<\/p>\n
\"We did, of course, proceed with the investigation. But we
\ncould not do anything to the person whom Cong said had raped her
\nbecause there was not enough evidence to apprehend him,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"But we'll keep on investigating the case until we sure we
\nwon't find any evidence that could be used against the man. But
\nwe'll close the investigation into the alleged defamation
\ncommitted by Cong because she, as the alleged suspect, is dead.\"<\/p>\n
Last night there was no information as to the monk's
