Pro-Israeli elements scorned by Moslems<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Scholar Amien Rais and the Indonesian Committee
\nfor World Moslems Solidarity (KISDI) deplored yesterday certain
\nIndonesians who had voiced support for Israel in the Middle East
\ncrisis, and urged them to be aware of their blunder.<\/p>\n
Amien said in a mass gathering here that some people and
\nanalysts had come to believe that former Israeli prime minister
\nShimon Peres and his Labor Party endorsed the Palestinian cause
\nmore than the Likud which is led by Benjamin Netanyahu.<\/p>\n
\"In my opinion, the two parties are merely two faces of the
\nsame coin. The only difference is that one is more subtle in
\nimplementing their policy while the other is more aggressive,\"
\nsaid Amien, who is the chairman of the 28-million strong
\nMuhammadiyah Moslem organization.<\/p>\n
The gathering, which was held at the Al Azhar Grand Mosque in
\nSouth Jakarta, was sponsored by KISDI and attended by about 2,000
\npeople.<\/p>\n
In its written statement, read by chairman Ahmad Sumargono,
\nKISDI also criticized public figures who had shown sympathy with
\nthe Israeli policy.<\/p>\n
Neither Amien Rais nor KISDI mentioned any names but recently
\nAbdurrahman Wahid, the chairman of the 30-million strong
\nNahdlatul Ulama Moslem organization, accepted Peres' request to
\njoin his institute, which he claimed fought for peace in the
\nMiddle East.<\/p>\n
According to KISDI \"those Indonesians should know that
\nIsraelis are cold-blooded terrorists and there is no way they
\nwill let the Palestinians regain their homeland and freedom,
\nbecause it's their basic policy\".<\/p>\n
\"And it is impossible to use sense with them. We appreciate
\nthe Indonesian stance on the Palestinian struggle and urge the
\ngovernment, the World Islamic Organization and ASEAN to boycott
\nIsrael in every international forum,\" it said.<\/p>\n
KISDI announced yesterday that it would establish an anti-
\nZionist task force to block any Zionist influences in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Amien further related the history of Zionist imperialism in
\nPalestine and said that to his knowledge, there were no Israeli
\ndocuments which said they would give freedom or land to
\nPalestine.<\/p>\n
\"Each day, Israeli soldiers impose systematical terrorism on
\nPalestinians. They have also repeatedly stalled their promise to
\nwithdraw their troops from Hebron.\"<\/p>\n
The latest refusal came from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
\nNetanyahu who said he would not stop the construction of a new
\nJewish settlement in East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n
Ambassadors<\/p>\n
Present at the gathering were Palestine Ambassador to
\nIndonesia Ribhi Awad and Sudanese Ambassador Salih Abdu Mas
\nHamoun.<\/p>\n
The speeches and statements were repeatedly greeted by Moslem
\nyouths shouting Allahu Akbar (Allah is Great) in an apparent show
\nof sympathy for Palestinians.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Awad, in his speech, thanked the Indonesian
\ngovernment for its consistent stance toward the Palestinian
\ncause.<\/p>\n
He also shouted \"Hidup (long live) Pak (Father) Harto, Pak
\nArafat and ABRI (Indonesian Armed Forces)\".<\/p>\n
A banner of the organizing committee read: Stop the activities
\nof any Moslem traitors who wear the mask of human rights and
\ndemocracy.<\/p>\n
Another banner asked the Indonesian government to close any
\npossibility of diplomatic relations with Israel. (12)<\/p>",
