Private sector told to fund vocational training centers<\/p>\n
PALEMBANG, South Sumatra (JP): The private sector must help
\nfund new vocational training centers, because it will benefit not
\nonly those trained but the private businesses themselves,
\nMinister of Manpower Abdul Latief says.<\/p>\n
Latief says the government is currently revamping the various
\nexisting vocational training centers, all still government
\nfunded, so that they could eventually be financial independent.<\/p>\n
The low productivity of Indonesian workers is partly caused by
\nthe absence or lack of effective industrial training programs for
\nthe workers, he said in a keynote address to a seminar by the
\nAssociation of Economists (ISEI) here yesterday.<\/p>\n
Latief said the private sector is also expected to join the
\nindustrial apprenticeship program which is being launched by the
\ngovernment at the technical school level.<\/p>\n
He appealed to the private sector to work closely with the
\ngovernment to ensure that the schemes could provide workers with
\nskills that are useful to the working world.<\/p>\n
He said that a number of the government vocational training
\ncenters in West Java, East Java and North Sumatra are already
\nself-financing.<\/p>\n
Middle-sized and large companies, he said, are encouraged to
\nestablish their own training centers.<\/p>\n
In return, the government is currently considering various
\nfiscal and monetary incentives for companies that participate in
\nthe industrial training programs.<\/p>\n
He told the seminar participants that Indonesia has no
\nalternative but to improve the professionalism of its human
\nresources to catch up with newly-industrialized countries.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia will be far lagging behind Malaysia, Singapore,
\nSouth Korea and Taiwan unless it begins to revamp its training
\nprogram to create professional human resources and develop
\ncompetitive business and industry in the country,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Latief said better training schemes are also necessary at
\nmanagerial levels because Indonesia still has to rely on
\nexpatriates to fill some managerial posts.<\/p>\n
\"We need to `Indonesianize' these positions,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The minister spelled out that in the next 15 years, Indonesia
\nneeds at least 12 million professionals and 90 million semi-
\nskilled workers to take it through the industrialization process.
\nAt present, Indonesia only has around 1.5 million professionals
\nand 49 million semi-skilled workers. (rms)<\/p>",
