        "content": "<p>Private companies help renovate schools<\/p>\n<p>Multa Fidrus, Tangerang<\/p>\n<p>A campaign launched by the Tangerang municipal administration to<br>\ninvolve businesspeople in its plan to renovate damaged school<br>\nbuildings has generated a good response as some 20 companies have<br>\ncommitted to parts of the project, which will start in October.<\/p>\n<p>\"Although we have allocated 42 percent of the total Rp 590<br>\nbillion (US$66.2 million) budget this year to education, we still<br>\nneed more for school renovation,\" Mayor Wahidin Halim told The<br>\nJakarta Post on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\"We can't postpone the project till next year, because we fear<br>\nthe damaged buildings could collapse on teachers and students at<br>\nany time.\"<\/p>\n<p>Wahidin said 180 school buildings needed to be renovated in<br>\nthe Rp 180 billion project.<\/p>\n<p>The administration will invite another 200 companies in the<br>\nmunicipality to a meeting next month to introduce the school<br>\nrenovation plan.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant to the city secretary for development affairs<br>\nIstiarso Suryo said that Tangerang City Council had approved the<br>\nadministration's proposal for the project, claiming that the<br>\nprivate companies would also enjoy financial benefit.<\/p>\n<p>\"The investors will receive interest on the money they have<br>\ninvested in the project. The administration will repay one-third<br>\nof the total investment each year, plus interest,\" he told the<br>\nPost on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>He calculated that should the first phase of the renovation<br>\nstart next month and be completed in January 2005, \"investors<br>\nwould receive the first repayment of the loan in February\".<\/p>\n<p>Istiarso claimed that the administration had formed a team<br>\nwhose tasks were to plan and supervise the school renovation<br>\nprojects.<\/p>\n<p>Also on the same day, non-governmental organization Tangerang<br>\nRegency Educational Council (DPKT) urged the 45 new councillors,<br>\nsworn in on Saturday, to increase further the budget for<br>\neducation.<\/p>\n<p>\"700 school buildings in all 26 districts need immediate<br>\nrenovation,\" DPKT chairman Encep Suhayat said.<\/p>\n<p>\"The councillors should also uphold newly endorsed Bylaw No.<br>\n17\/2004 on the implementation of educational programs in the<br>\nregency, so everyone will have access to education,\" he added.<\/p>",
