Prisoners never miss elections<\/p>\n
JAMBI, Jambi: Criminals can be deprived of their physical
\nfreedom, but not their political rights.<\/p>\n
A total of 632 prisoners serving sentences in penitentiaries
\nacross the province are given chances to watch television
\nbroadcasts and learn about political parties they will vote for
\nJune 7. A TV set is placed in a room in their respective
\npenitentiary complex instead of the cells, for the prisoners to
\nwatch special broadcasts on the elections.<\/p>\n
Amelia Abidin, an official at the provincial chapter of
\nMinistry of Justice, told Antara on Thursday that the inmates
\nwere allowed to monitor all developments of the election process
\ntaking place outside their bars because they had yet to lose
\ntheir right to vote.<\/p>\n
There are seven prisons across the province, almost half of
\nthem in the provincial capital.<\/p>\n
According to law, an inmate loses his or her voting right if
\nthey face a maximum sentence of five years.<\/p>\n
Amelia said some of the parties contesting the polls had also
\nplaced placards and other attributes outside the buildings in the
\npenitentiary complexes.<\/p>\n
For the sake of votes, even criminals are deemed saints in the
