Prisoners face transfer after riot<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Thirty-seven prisoners, who are believed to have
\nprovoked other inmates to start a riot at the overcrowded Bulak
\nKapal penitentiary in Bekasi on Sunday, will be transferred to
\nNusakambangan, an official said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\"The transfer will be conducted soon, but the date is still
\nconfidential,\" Hasanuddin, the director general of correctional
\ninstitutions under the Ministry of Law and Legislation, told The
\nJakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Hasanuddin said the prisoners were moved to Cirebon Prison in
\nWest Java on Tuesday to await for their departure to
\nNusakambangan Prison on Nusakambangan island in the southern part
\nof Central Java.<\/p>\n
Nusakambangan Prison is a maximum security prison designed for
\ndangerous and repeat offenders.<\/p>\n
The riot began after a group of prisoners attacked a prison
\nguard and burned part of the complex. Five prisoners were shot by
\nprison guards during the outbreak of violence in which two guards
\nwere injured.<\/p>\n
Hasanuddin said his office would further investigate the case
\nto determine if other prisoners were involved.<\/p>\n
\"If other (convicts) are involved, they will be transferred,
\ntoo,\" Hasanuddin said.<\/p>\n
He also said some prisoners would be moved to other prisons
\nbecause the Bulak Kapal penitentiary was overcrowded.<\/p>\n
\"We may transfer them to prisons in Cirebon, Bandung or
\nSurabaya,\" Hasanuddin said, adding that the plan would be carried
\nout gradually.<\/p>\n
Hasanuddin also said similar actions would follow at other
\novercrowded prisons.(08)<\/p>",
