        "content": "<p>Prisoners badly treated: Activists<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Rights activists reported yesterday that<br>\npolitical prisoners in a Jakarta prison have been mistreated<br>\ndespite their poor health.<\/p>\n<p>The activists from three human rights groups told the National<br>\nCommission on Human Rights that they knew of five ill political<br>\nprisoners at the Cipinang penitentiary who are badly treated.<\/p>\n<p>\"Guards insist on handcuffing them when they (the prisoners)<br>\nleave their cells for a medical checkup,\" said Gustaf Dupe from<br>\nthe Indonesian Society for Humanity.<\/p>\n<p>The society is a Christian organization which sends its<br>\nmembers to prisons on Sundays to lead prayers.<\/p>\n<p>Gustaf identified the prisoners as Fernando de Araujo, who was<br>\njailed for seeking East Timor's independence; elderly Abdul<br>\nLatif, Sukatno and Asep Suryawan, for their involvement in the<br>\nIndonesian Communist Party's attempted coup in 1965; and Eko<br>\nMaryadi, a member of the unrecognized Alliance of Independent<br>\nJournalists.<\/p>\n<p>The activists, who met with rights commission members B.N.<br>\nMarbun and Saafroedin Bahar, said that Fernando has a complex<br>\nillness of diabetes, kidney failure and heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>They said that prison wardens are ignoring United Nations<br>\nResolution No. 663 C 1957 and No. 2076 1977 concerning \"the<br>\nminimum standard in treating prisoners\".<\/p>\n<p>Andriyanto, from the outspoken Pijar Foundation, said that<br>\nprisoner Eko Maryadi's request to have a checkup outside of the<br>\npenitentiary was rejected without reason.<\/p>\n<p>Cipinang prison officials were not available for comment.<br>\n(16\/14)<\/p>",
