Prison escapee faces 20 years' imprisonment<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): A prosecutor demanded the Bogor District Court
\nyesterday to sentence Erling Doli Wijaya alias Mikel, who escaped
\nfrom his detention cell almost four weeks ago, to 20 years in
\nprison for his involvement in a robbery and murder on the
\nJagorawi toll road on Oct. 11 last year.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Andi Rachman Asbar told the court that Mikel was
\nguilty of violating Chapter 365, Article 4, of the Criminal Code
\nconcerning robbery.<\/p>\n
\"The defendant should be punished for the crime he committed,\"
\nAndi said.<\/p>\n
Before the court session began, Mikel's lawyers -- Almuzfar,
\nMansjur Abubakar and Castrio Pandji -- protested the court for
\nallowing the prosecutor to read the indictment despite the
\nabsence of the defendant.<\/p>\n
\"The indictment violates Chapter 196, Article 1, of Criminal
\nCode Procedures,\" Almuzfar said.<\/p>\n
But judge Usman Wahab decided the indictment could be
\ncontinued because Mikel previously attended other trial sessions.<\/p>\n
\"The Criminal Code does not have regulations that pertain to
\nthe defendant, who attended previous sessions but later escaped,\"
\nUsman said.<\/p>\n
He quoted former Supreme Court chief Oemar Senoadji, who once
\nsaid that such a court session could continue.<\/p>\n
The lawyers did not agree with the judge's decision, telling
\nthe court they resigned as Mikel's lawyers.<\/p>\n
On June 27, Mikel escaped from an escort of two officers of
\nthe Bogor Prosecutor's Office.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, East Java Police spokesman Lt. Col. Sofwat Hadi
\nsaid yesterday that police were still looking for Mikel.<\/p>\n
Sofwat said two police officers failed to arrest Mikel on Jl.
\nCiliwung, in Surabaya, East Java, on Friday.<\/p>\n
Two police officers, including a police officer from Bogor,
\nTatang Ruswandi, who was assigned to capture Mikel, saw the
\nsuspect driving a Suzuki jeep on the street at about 7:30 p.m. on
\nFriday, a police source said.<\/p>\n
Mikel, his wife Elizabeth and a sister-in-law, Lulu, tried to
\nhire a doctor in the area, the officer said.<\/p>\n
He said Mikel, who apparently knew he was being watched, tried
\nto escape by breaking the right window of his car and threatening
\nto shoot Tatang after police officers fired a warning shot.<\/p>\n
The suspect speeded up his car and nearly hit Tatang, who
\ntried to stop the car, he said.<\/p>\n
Tatang managed to jump aside to avoid the car but fired his
\npistol accidentally, hitting his own left leg, the police source
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Tatang was being treated at RKZ Hospital on Jl. Diponegoro,
