Priok rail station to be expanded<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Plans are in the making to expand facilities at
\nthe Tanjung Priok railway station by adding a new route for
\npassenger trains, an official of state-owned railway company
\nPerumka said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Perumka's Jakarta Operations Office chief, Eddy Sasongko,
\nrefuted earlier press reports saying that Minister of
\nTransportation Haryanto Dhanutirto wanted Tanjung Priok station
\nto be used as a container terminal.<\/p>\n
Antara news agency quoted the minister as saying Wednesday
\nthat he wanted Perumka to reactivate the Tanjung Priok railway
\nstation for use as a freight and container railroad transport
\nterminal.<\/p>\n
\"The minister's instruction to us says that the Tanjung Priok
\nstation should have additional routes for passenger trains, and
\nnot for containers,\" Eddy told The Jakarta Post. A new route
\ncurrently being planned is between Jakarta (Priok) and
\nBanjarnegara, Central Java.<\/p>\n
According to Eddy, the Tanjung Priok station is still being
\nused for passenger and freight trains. However, facilities are at
\npresent available only for economy class travelers from Jakarta
\nto Semarang and Surakarta, Central Java.<\/p>\n
The only route available at present for the transportation of
\nfreight by railroad, Eddy said, runs from Gedebage in Bandung,
\nWest Java, through the Tanjung Priok station to the Pasoso
\nrailroad terminal about one kilometer further toward the harbor.<\/p>\n
\"At present freight transports run at an average of four times
\na day, but we can increase this to six,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Impossible<\/p>\n
Eddy said it was impossible to turn the Tanjung Priok railway
\nstation into a container transport terminal because it was not
\nequipped with container transportation facilities. Furthermore,
\nhe explained, the electric wires running above the tracks for the
\nelectric trains would be in the way of the cranes that would be
\nneeded to move the containers.<\/p>\n
According to Eddy, the Pasoso terminal on the other hand could
\nbe used for containers as there are no electric wires there.<\/p>\n
\"So far, container loading and unloading activities occur at
\nthe Pasoso terminal and not Tanjung Priok station,\" Eddy said. He
\nadded, however, that Perumka was planning to open a container
\nrailroad transport service from Pasoso to Surabaya. (01)<\/p>",
