Police are currently investigating allegations of child grooming\ninvolving a school principal, identified by the initials AMA, against\nfemale students at a vocational high school (SMK) in South Tangerey. The\nIndonesian Education Monitoring Network (JPPI) has revealed that child\ngrooming is a classic issue regarding abuse cases in schools.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn reality, this has long occurred conventionally within school\nenvironments. Perpetrators exploit power relations\u2014whether as teachers,\nstaff, or seniors\u2014to provide special attention, gifts, or academic\nadvantages to victims so that they feel \u2018special\u2019 and are unable to\nrefuse when exploitation occurs,\u201d said JPPI National Coordinator, Ubaid\nMatraji, when contacted on Monday (18\/5\/2026).<\/p>\n
Ubaid stated that such cases are becoming more prevalent due to\nincreasing public awareness and the courage of victims to speak out. He\nnoted that the presence of complaint posts and \u2018brave to speak\u2019\nmovements has brought similar cases to the surface.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn schools, this modus operandi is extremely dangerous because it\noften hides behind the guise of \u2018academic closeness\u2019 or \u2018achievement\nguidance\u2019. Perpetrators deliberately blur the professional boundaries\nbetween teacher and student,\u201d Ubaid added.<\/p>\n
According to JPPI records, cases of violence or sexual abuse in\nschools this year are high, even surpassing cases in university\nenvironments. Based on JPPI monitoring from January to March 2026, 233\ncases of violence in educational environments were recorded. Ubaid noted\nthat this figure indicates that violence is no longer a sporadic\nincident but a systemic phenomenon occurring repeatedly and widely.<\/p>\n
JPPI data shows that school-level violence is at the highest position\nat approximately 71 per cent. Meanwhile, cases in higher education\naccount for 11 per cent, Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) 9 per\ncent, non-formal education units 6 per cent, and madrasahs 3 per\ncent.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe dominance of the school level, reaching 71 per cent, shows that\nprimary and secondary education spaces have become the epicentre of\nviolence. Meanwhile, combined, religious-based education (pesantren and\nmadrasah) contributes 12 per cent, indicating that no educational\necosystem is truly safe from violence,\u201d explained Ubaid.<\/p>\n
JPPI findings also show that the most common types of violence are\nsexual violence at 46 per cent, physical violence at 34 per cent,\nbullying at 19 per cent, policies containing violence at 6 per cent, and\npsychological violence at 2 per cent.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlmost half of the cases involve sexual violence. This signifies a\nserious failure in protecting students from the most fundamental crimes\nagainst the body and human dignity. Combined, the three main types of\nviolence (sexual, physical, and bullying) account for approximately 89\nper cent of all cases,\u201d Ubaid clarified.<\/p>\n
Regarding the identity of the perpetrators, Ubaid stated that 33 per\ncent are educators and educational staff, while 30 per cent are\nstudents, 24 per cent are adults, and 13 per cent are others.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis data presents a very concerning fact: the largest group of\nperpetrators comes from within the education system itself. If you\ncombine teachers, lecturers, educational staff, and students, more than\n63 per cent of perpetrators originate from within the internal\nenvironment of educational institutions,\u201d said Ubaid.<\/p>\n
Regarding the specific case in South Tangerang, police are\ninvestigating the alleged psychological manipulation by principal AMA at\na private SMK in Pamulang. AMA has been interrogated by the police.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring our investigation at the school, we received information that\nMr AMA arrived at the South Tangerang Police Station to consult\nregarding news circulating on social media. The PPA unit immediately\ntook his statement until approximately 11:00 PM,\u201d said South Tangerang\nPolice Criminal Investigation Unit Head, AKP Wira Graha Setiawan, on\nSaturday (16\/5).<\/p>\n
Wira stated that the victim has not filed an official police report\n(LP) as of yet. He could not yet explain the results of the examination\nof AMA as the investigation is ongoing.
