Press demand councillor transparency<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Dozens of journalists in Makassar
\nstaged a protest on Wednesday in front of the city legislative
\ncouncil, demanding councillors to be more transparent.<\/p>\n
After a brief protest, the journalists from various
\nassociations, including the Alliance of Independent Journalists
\n(AJI) and Makassar Collective Forum for Journalists (Forbes),
\nrushed into the office of council chairman Amin Syam.<\/p>\n
In a dialog with Amin Syam, the journalists questioned why
\ncouncillors often held closed-door meetings of late, especially
\nahead of the gubernatorial election early next year.<\/p>\n
\"The closed-door meetings have impeded the public's right to
\nknow and undermined transparency. Every meeting held by
\ncouncillors should be open to public, including journalists,\"
\nsaid M. Kiblat, one of the protesters.<\/p>\n
In response to the journalists demand, Amin insisted that the
\ncouncillors had the right to hold closed-door meeting according
