President's picture burning probed<\/p>\n
KENDARI, Northeast Sulawesi: Police are investigating the
\nburning of pictures portraying President Abdurrahman Wahid, which
\nallegedly involved a local councillor during a recent rally held
\ninside the provincial council building.<\/p>\n
Northeast Sulawesi Police chief Brig. Gen. Djumain Arief said
\nPresident Abdurrahman is the legitimate head of state so any
\ndeliberate disfigurement of his image is deemed an assault and
\nshould therefore be probed, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
\"It is not necessary for the police to wait for the report,
\nthe police will respond to the case by conducting an
\ninvestigation,\" Djumain said.<\/p>\n
Police have so far questioned four witnesses. A potential
\nwitness, a local journalist, has refused to be questioned.<\/p>\n
Local legislator Andrey Jufri allegedly burned the picture of
\nPresident Abdurrahman inside the council building following
\npressure from student protesters. Andrey has reported the
\nincident to the police in a written statement.<\/p>\n
Djumain said he had received the statement but still planned
\nto question Andrey. The police are still waiting for permission
\nfrom the Minister of Home Affairs to summon Andrey.<\/p>\n
The students staged the rally on May 14 to protest President
\nAbdurrahman's visit to the province. (emf)<\/p>",
