President's brother suggests change in style<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A younger brother of President Abdurrahman Wahid
\nasked the President on Tuesday to alter his leadership style and
\ncarefully deliver statements relating to critical issues.<\/p>\n
Salahuddin Wahid said that the President should develop a
\nsofter character when dealing with certain parties and "make
\nfriends" with Peoples Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Amien
\nRais, instead of widening the division between them.<\/p>\n
"The President should change his style in leading the country.
\nHe should communicate instead of igniting disputes between
\neverybody," Salahuddin said.<\/p>\n
He said that Abdurrahman should "carefully pick" his words
\nbefore making statements in front of the public, and realize that
\nsometimes his choice of words create more problems.<\/p>\n
"For example, he said this week that many things had created
\npublic furor. That is improper. He should be more careful when
\nmaking statements, as they will create more dilemmas," he said.<\/p>\n
Salahuddin cited Abdurrahman's statement during a post-Idul
\nFitri gathering with the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI) on
\nMonday night, where he said that many ulemas have been looking
\nfor official positions.<\/p>\n
"The way I see it, he has made the gathering pointless because
\nhe has delivered harsh criticism at an improper time, and his
\nspeech managed to push people to the edge.<\/p>\n
"The gathering turned out to achieve less than expected," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He further said that Abdurrahman should restore his
\nrelationship with Amien Rais and other Central Axis figures, such
\nas the United Development Party (PPP) chairman Hamzah Haz, in the
\nfuture.<\/p>\n
"I do not think he has a problem with Akbar Tandjung (The
\nHouse of Representative Speaker). But, Gus Dur (Abdurrahman's
\npopular title) should mend his relationship with pak Amien Rais
\nand Hamzah Haz," he said, while adding that Akbar was a less
\nemotional man.<\/p>\n
Salahuddin also called on all political elites to sit down
\ntogether and be honest in pointing out major differences among
\nthemselves so that they could start concentrating on the nation.<\/p>\n
"So far, they only care about their own interests. They should
\ntry to openly discuss their differences so that they will not
\npublicly exchange harsh comments against each other any more," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"Probably, they should conduct routine meetings, because we
\n(the people) cannot remain in this stagnant position any more.<\/p>\n
"The country needs improvement and they should stop
