President's aides 'misunderstand their position'<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto's half brother and noted
\nbusinessman Probosutedjo said Saturday that many high-ranking
\nofficials did not fully understand their position as the
\nPresident's aides.<\/p>\n
Speaking after the groundbreaking ceremony of the Gadjah Mada
\nUniversity's mosque, Probosutedjo was commenting on whether high-
\nranking officials would resign over the Busang scandal.<\/p>\n
"They (high-ranking officials) won't (resign). Most of the
\ntime if they are told to step down, they are not willing to
\nresign because of their mistakes or complacence, or for something
\nintentional."<\/p>\n
Probosutedjo declined to say if he was referring to the
\nMinister of Mines and Energy I.B. Sudjana.<\/p>\n
"I mean all high-ranking officials who are not responsible.
\nWhy don't they know their tasks as high-ranking officials or
\nministers?<\/p>\n
"If they don't realize their position as the President's
\n(aides), it would be better if they refused to be appointed. They
\nwere willing. But when there's a mistake, they put the blame on
\ntheir superior," Probosutedjo said.<\/p>\n
Probosutedjo said the lack of understanding among officials
\nand ministers on the role of President's aides means "the
\nPresident often becomes the victim".<\/p>\n
He said many officials and ministers do not take
\nresponsibility for their mistakes.<\/p>\n
He said this was because most high-ranking officials had been
\nappointed by the President and not on their own request.<\/p>\n
He said the Busang case should be a valuable lesson, and the
\nPresident's aides should be willing to take responsibility.<\/p>\n
Probosutedjo said there was a marked difference between the
\nPresident's aides (pembantu Presiden) and servants (pembantu
\nrumah tangga). The latter are only responsible for house work, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"Servants only sweep, clean rooms and the bathroom and
\nothers," he said.<\/p>\n
President of PT Bakrie and Brothers Tanri Abeng also joined in
\nthe criticism over the Busang case. Speaking after a Golkar
\ncampaign in Ujungpandang, South Sulawesi yesterday, he said
\nCanada's Bre-X Minerals Ltd. and its consultants clearly lacked
\n"professional integrity" and attention to detail.<\/p>\n
"Professional management not only relies on technical skills
\nand knowledge, but also integrity," he said.<\/p>\n
"How can we progress if large projects in the world (are run
\nby people lacking) personal integrity?" Tanri said.<\/p>\n
Indonesians, he said, should not easily trust outsiders and
