Presidential guards to be restructured<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Newly appointed chief of Paspampres (the
\npresidential guards) Brig. Gen. Nono Sampono asserted on Tuesday
\nthat he would reorganize the squad so as to tighten security
\naround the vicinity and quarters of the President and Vice
\nPresident, reports said.<\/p>\n
Nono said that there should be a proper arrangement of the
\nguards' duties since there were three groups of Paspampres that
\nwere assigned specific tasks, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
"The security arrangements for the President are normal,
\nactually. We just think that the current arrangement is too lax,"
\nNono told the media after a modest ceremony at Halim
\nPerdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta, sending off President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri on her first ASEAN tour.<\/p>\n
The first group, named Group A -- consisting of some 450
\npersonnel -- is assigned to guard the President and her family.
\nGroup B is for the Vice President and his family, while Group C
\nis tasked to guard presidential guests.<\/p>\n
Nono, who was previously deputy chief of Paspampres, gave an
\nexample that nowadays presidential guards from the third zone
\nmight approach the President, although they were supposed to
\nremain in the outer ring.<\/p>\n
"Only the guards in the first zone are allowed to be near the
\nPresident. This is standard protocol and procedure ... anywhere
\nin the palace or presidential quarters there are certain areas
\nfor the public and officials that are off-limits," he said.<\/p>\n
Nono further said that there would be no restriction on press
\ncoverage as it would be allowed in accordance with customary
\nprotocol. "There will be no restrictions on that," he said. (edt)<\/p>",
