Presidential elections bill finalized<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The government promised on Wednesday to submit bills
\non direct presidential elections and the composition of the
\nPeople's Consultative Assembly (MPR) to the House of
\nRepresentatives before the end of this year.<\/p>\n
Minister of Home Affairs Hari Sabarno said his ministry would
\ndiscuss the final drafts of the bills with President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri before submitting them to the House for
\ndeliberation.<\/p>\n
\"Some contentious issues remain, such as whether or not we
\nwill have presidential and legislative elections simultaneously
\nor separately,\" Hari said.<\/p>\n
He expressed optimism that the government would be able to
\nresolve these differences before the end of this year.<\/p>\n
The House and government are currently discussing bills on
\ngeneral elections and political parties.<\/p>\n
Bills on direct presidential election, the MPR's composition,
\npolitical parties, and general elections are essential for the
