Presidential candidates do more glad-handing<\/p>\n

The two presidential candidates camps intensified their efforts
\non Saturday to garner more support nationwide as the Sept. 20
\npresidential election runoff draws near.<\/p>\n
In Jakarta, vice presidential hopeful Hasyim Muzadi visited on
\nSaturday, Abdurrahman \"Gus Dur\" Wahid, chief patron of the
\nNational Awakening Party (PKB), at Cipto Mangunkusumo General
\nHospital (RSCM) in Central Jakarta. Gus Dur was hospitalized a few
\ndays ago after his insulin level surged above normal.<\/p>\n
The visit was apparently aimed at mending Hasyim's strained
\nrelationship with Gus Dur, as well as garnering support from him
\nand his partner in the election.<\/p>\n
Gus Dur managed to \"joke a lot,\" Hasyim said, Antara reported
\non Saturday. \"The only thing we talked seriously about was the
\nrecent release of Malaysian former deputy prime minister Anwar
\nIbrahim,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Gus Dur previously led the Nadhlatul Ulama (NU), the country's
\nlargest Muslim organization now chaired by Hasyim.<\/p>\n
On the same day presidential candidate Susilo Bambang
\nYudhoyono, from Hasyim's rival camp, visited Nanggroe Aceh
\nDarussalam province, where he met Muslim clerics. He reiterated
\nhis promise that he would return peace to the strife-torn
\nprovince should he be elected.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the day, Susilo met with the Christian community in
\nMedan, North Sumatra province, where he vowed to eradicate
\nchronic corruption in the country. The same promise was made by
\nhis running mate Jusuf Kalla in Padang, West Sumatra province.<\/p>\n
In Banjarmasin, Central Kalimantan province, Golkar Party
\nleader Akbar Tandjung again drummed up support for Megawati.
\nSpeaking during the declaration of the province's Nationhood
\nCoalition that supports Megawati's bid for the presidency, Akbar
\nsaid that supporting Megawati had been a party decision, so that
\nall members had to support it or be punished.<\/p>\n
Later in Jakarta Akbar attended a youth gathering that
\ndeclared support for Megawati's bid for the presidency. The
\ngathering was attended by some 2,000 youths, claiming that they
\nrepresented 25 youth organizations nationwide.<\/p>",
