President, state secretary summoned<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Legal representatives of 13 political parties
\ndemanded on Tuesday that the panel of judges at the Central
\nJakarta District Court summon President Megawati Soekarnoputri
\nand State Secretary Bambang Kesowo in the trial against the
\ncountry's three largest political parties, which have been
\naccused of illegally occupying state buildings.<\/p>\n
The plaintiffs lawyer Ikhsan Abdullah said their attendance
\nwould be of paramount importance for the court as they were the
\nprimary defendants in the case.<\/p>\n
The demand was echoed by lawyers of Golkar party, the United
\nDevelopment Party (PPP) and the Indonesian Democratic Party of
\nStruggle (PDI-P).<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Heri Swantoro ordered the bailiffs to summon
\nthe President and the state secretary\/minister or their legal
\nrepresentatives to appear in court in the subsequent trials.<\/p>\n
"If they fail to appear, we can proceed without them," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The trial will resume on Feb. 11 when the panel of judges will
\noffer an amicable settlement to both parties.<\/p>\n
The plaintiffs accused the three parties of violating Law No.
\n5\/1960 on land reform and demanded that they return the assets
\nwhich were given by the New Order regime -- JP<\/p>\n

JAKARTA: A 28-year-old street singer, identified only as
\nFauzi, fell from a pedestrian bridge in front of the Bank
\nIndonesia building on Jl. M.H. Thamrin, Central Jakarta, on
\nTuesday afternoon, into the busway lane.<\/p>\n
"For the time being, we are assuming the victim committed
\nsuicide," said Gambir Police subprecinct officer Comr. Nanang
\nRudy S. "But it is also possible that there was a murder attempt
\nby other street singers."<\/p>\n
Some street singers at the scene said that they knew the
\nvictim, a resident of Jembatan Lima subdistrict, West Jakarta,
\nbut they had nothing to do with his death.<\/p>\n
"We just knew him as a street singer who usually sang with
\ntwo of his friends on buses along the Blok M-Kota route," said
\none of the street singers.<\/p>\n
The incident forced the city transportation agency to close
\nthe lane from the intersection of Jl. Thamrin and Jl. Kebon Sirih
\nto the Arjuna Wijaya statue traffic circle.<\/p>\n
An official with the agency W. Hutajulu said 12 busway buses
\nwere shifted to the non-busway lane.<\/p>\n
"There was traffic congestion for about 15 minutes," he said.
