The Indonesian government is exploring ways to eliminate long waiting lists for the Hajj pilgrimage, as directed by the President, to better accommodate millions of prospective pilgrims. Deputy Minister Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak explained that the current queues stem from increasing registrations against limited quotas set by Saudi Arabia, and the ministry is considering a flexible ticketing system similar to direct purchases. This reform aims to make the process fairer and more efficient, drawing comparisons with systems in countries like Malaysia and India.

The government is studying a scheme for organising the Hajj
pilgrimage without queues, while still ensuring protection for millions
of prospective pilgrims who have been waiting for a long time. Deputy
Minister for Hajj and Umrah Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak stated that the
idea is currently in the discussion stage and has not yet become a
decision. “The President now wants us to think about how to make Hajj
without queuing. So, Hajj without queuing. That is what we are
formulating,” said Dahnil in Jakarta on Thursday (9/4/2026). He
explained that the long Hajj queues in Indonesia are inseparable from
Hajj financial management, which causes the number of registrants to
continue increasing, while the quota is limited. “The more there are
(registrants), the longer the queue,” said Dahnil. As a comparison,
Dahnil mentioned that several countries have different patterns in Hajj
management. In Malaysia, long queues occur through the Hajj savings
system. Meanwhile, in some other countries like India, he said, the
queuing scheme is not as long as in Indonesia. The government, he said,
is examining the possibility of implementing a more flexible model,
similar to a direct ticket purchase/competition system according to the
quota given by Saudi Arabia. “So we are given a quota of 200,000 by
Saudi Arabia. Then we set the price. Then no need to queue. So each
person books directly, whoever gets it, they depart,” he said.
",
