        "content": "<p>JAKARTA \u2013 President Prabowo Subianto\u2019s warning about the dangers\nposed by waste at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Management Facility\nhas now proven tragically prescient.<\/p>\n<p>A landslide at the waste heap on Sunday, 8 March 2026, claimed six\nlives, with one person still missing and six rescued alive.<\/p>\n<p>The incident serves as a stark reminder that Bantargebang\u2019s capacity,\nwhich has reached over 55 million tonnes, has reached a critical\npoint.<\/p>\n<p>President Prabowo Subianto had emphasised the urgency of waste\nmanagement since the Full Cabinet Meeting on 20 October 2025, stating:\n\u201cIf I\u2019m not mistaken, reports indicate that Bantargebang has already\naccumulated tens of millions of tonnes, 55 million tonnes stacked up. If\nthere\u2019s heavy rain, it could endanger many neighbourhoods around\nit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to these risks, the government is targeting construction\nof 34 Waste-to-Energy Power Plants (PLTSa) distributed across Jakarta,\nBandung, Surabaya and Bali. The project is estimated to be completed\nwithin two years and is expected to convert waste into energy whilst\nreducing environmental impact and supporting the tourism sector.<\/p>\n<p>The tragedy at Bantargebang proves that the President\u2019s warning was\nnot mere rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>According to Eko Uban, a rescue member with Bekasi City Fire and\nRescue Services, the landslide occurred on Sunday at approximately 14:30\nWIB whilst several trucks were queued to discharge their loads. The\ncondition of the waste heap, which had become wet from rainfall in the\npreceding days, significantly increased the risk of collapse.<\/p>\n<p>By Monday evening, 9 March 2026, the death toll had risen to 13\npeople, with six confirmed dead.<\/p>\n<p>Desiana Kartika Bahari, Head of Jakarta Search and Rescue Office,\nstated that the bodies were found approximately 10 metres below the\nsurface of the waste heap, near trucks that had been buried. \u201cThe truck\nwas found last night, but there were no casualties inside it. Therefore,\nthe casualty found today is likely the driver who was in the truck we\ndiscovered last night,\u201d she said on Monday, 9 March 2026.<\/p>",
