MALANG \u2014 President Prabowo Subianto has set a target for Indonesia to\nachieve sugar self-sufficiency within two years. The target is faster\nthan the initial four-year projection and forms part of the government\u2019s\naccelerated agenda to strengthen national food independence.<\/p>\n
The target was announced by the President while attending the Grand\nHarvest in support of the TNI\u2019s National Food Security Programme in\nMalang Regency, East Java, on Friday (17\/7\/2026).<\/p>\n
On that occasion, the President revealed that Agriculture Minister\nAndi Amran Sulaiman had earlier reported a sugarcane rejuvenation\nprogramme covering 100,000 hectares per year, projected to deliver sugar\nself-sufficiency within four years. After further discussion, Minister\nAmran stated the target could be accelerated to two years.<\/p>\n
Hearing this commitment, the President expressed his appreciation to\nMinister Amran before thousands of attendees.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Agriculture Minister reported to me that our programme now is\n100,000 hectares per year, which would be achieved in four years. But\nwhen I asked him again, he boldly and bravely said, \u2018Sir, we can do it\nin two years,\u2019\u201d said Prabowo.<\/p>\n
Prabowo conveyed a special message to Minister Amran, which was\ngreeted with applause from the participants.<\/p>\n
\u201cI said that\u2019s good, but don\u2019t end up in hospital, Agriculture\nMinister. Promise, two years but don\u2019t end up in hospital. The nation\nand the people still need you,\u201d said Prabowo.<\/p>\n
Prabowo emphasised that accelerating sugar self-sufficiency is part\nof the government\u2019s grand strategy to strengthen the nation\u2019s\nindependence. Having achieved the food self-sufficiency target, the\ngovernment is now moving towards energy self-sufficiency and\nstrengthening water security.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur target of food self-sufficiency has been achieved. Now we are\nheading towards energy self-sufficiency. Water self-sufficiency is being\ndeveloped so that all our people have access to clean water and water\nfor crops,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Prabowo expressed appreciation for the hard work of the entire\ngovernment apparatus, the TNI, the National Police, ministries,\nagencies, regional governments and farmers who continue to safeguard\nvarious national strategic programmes.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am proud to see everyone working hard. The ministers, the TNI\nCommander, the National Police Chief, everyone working nimbly without\nrest. Even many senior state officials have collapsed and been admitted\nto hospital because of hard work,\u201d said Prabowo.<\/p>\n
According to Prabowo, this hard work is being carried out to\naccelerate the realisation of public welfare and to prove that Indonesia\nis able to stand on its own strength.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are chasing these targets because the people have endured for far\ntoo long a life that is unworthy of a great and rich nation like\nIndonesia. We will prove to the world that the Indonesian nation is\nrising with our own strength. No other nation will build Indonesia other\nthan ourselves,\u201d said Prabowo.<\/p>\n
Agriculture Ministry Prepares Acceleration Measures<\/p>\n
Responding to Prabowo\u2019s instruction, Amran stated his readiness to\naccelerate the national sugarcane rejuvenation programme through\ncultivation modernisation, increased productivity, the use of superior\nseed varieties, agricultural mechanisation and stronger partnerships\nwith farmers and the sugar industry.<\/p>\n
According to him, this acceleration is a strategic step to increase\nnational sugar production, reduce import dependency and improve the\nwelfare of sugarcane farmers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are ready to carry out the President\u2019s instruction. The entire\nAgriculture Ministry apparatus will work at maximum capacity together\nwith regional governments, state-owned enterprises, the business\ncommunity and farmers so that the two-year sugar self-sufficiency target\ncan be realised,\u201d said Amran.<\/p>\n
