President of Indonesia, accompanied by several ministers from the Red\nand White Cabinet, brought gifts for all residents of Miangas Island in\nTalaud Islands Regency, North Sulawesi Province, on Saturday (9\/5\/2026).\nAs one of Indonesia\u2019s outermost islands directly bordering the\nPhilippines, the Head of State presented mobile phones to the people of\nMiangas.<\/p>\n
This initiative forms part of the government\u2019s commitment to ensuring\nthat communities in border areas remain connected and feel the presence\nof the state up to the foremost points of the Unitary State of the\nRepublic of Indonesia. During his visit to Miangas Island following\nattendance at the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, the President\nemphasised the importance of strengthening communication and internet\naccess for communities in outermost regions.<\/p>\n
Prabowo also provided assistance to the residents of Miangas Island,\nincluding hundreds of Starlink units, mobile phones, internet modems,\nand enhancements to telecommunications infrastructure through support\nfor developing Base Transceiver Stations (BTS). He assessed that\ncommunication connectivity is no longer merely an additional facility\nbut has become a basic need for society.<\/p>\n
This step is simultaneously an important part of national defence and\nsovereignty. Therefore, he continued, Indonesia\u2019s outermost regions must\nbe a priority for development so that communities are not isolated and\nhave adequate communication access.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen there is strengthening the network so that mobile phones can\noperate here. There is the minister, Mrs Meutya here, Mrs Meutya is the\nMinister of Communication and Digitalisation, and she will provide\nmobile phones, there are Starlinks and mobile phones for all\nhouseholds,\u201d said Prabowo during his visit and dialogue with residents\nin the courtyard of SMKN 2 Talaud.<\/p>\n
According to Prabowo, strengthening the communication network on\nMiangas Island is expected to support various daily community\nactivities, from the education sector, health services, to the economic\nactivities of coastal communities and fishermen. In addition, he stated\nthat better communication access is also considered important in\nsupporting emergency communications in border areas.<\/p>\n
Prabowo believes that the availability of stronger internet and\ntelecommunications access will open up new economic development\nopportunities for local communities. The presence of a stable\ncommunication network is also expected to improve the quality of public\nservices and accelerate public access to various government digital\nservices.<\/p>\n
The strengthening of connectivity in Miangas simultaneously reflects\nthe direction of government development that is no longer centred in big\ncities but reaches out to the outermost islands that serve as the front\nline of national sovereignty.
