President issues `written statement'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A press statement attributed to President
\n\"Abdurrachman\" Wahid was distributed by the office of Gen.
\nWiranto, the coordinating minister for political affairs and
\nsecurity, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
No one at the State Secretariat was able to confirm the
\nunsigned statement, while officials traveling with the President
\non a visit to Beijing also had no explanation.<\/p>\n
Maj. Gen. (Pol) I Wayan Karya, a spokesman at Wiranto's
\noffice, said the President gave the statement to Gen. Wiranto
\nprior to his departure.<\/p>\n
There was no explanation about the misspelling of the
\nPresident's first name, from Abdurrahman to Abdurrachman.<\/p>\n
Since his election to the presidency on Oct. 20, Abdurrahman
\nhas only once issued a press statement, preferring to talk
\ndirectly to reporters.<\/p>\n
That one statement -- containing the State Secretariat's
\nmasthead -- cleared the name of Yusril Izha Mahendra, the
\nminister for law and legal affairs, from charges of corruption.<\/p>\n
The latest statement, which was not printed on the State
\nSecretariat's stationary, called on the nation to end all
\nconflicts and violence and to work toward unity.<\/p>\n
It also ordered the nation's law enforcement agencies to \"take
\nevery measure and action to enforce the law against anyone who
\nviolates the Constitution and law.\"<\/p>\n
\"It also appeals to people to be on the alert against the
\npossibility of security disturbances and threats aimed at
\nfostering social conflict and behavior that could lead toward the
\ndisintegration of the people and the nation.\"<\/p>\n
The President has been widely criticized for embarking on a
\nnumber of foreign visits and neglecting various crises at home,
\nparticularly the rising tension in Aceh, where a growing number
\nof people are calling for a self-determination referendum.
