President Estrada rushed to hospital<\/p>\n
MANILA (Agencies): President Joseph Estrada was taken to
\nhospital on Tuesday where tests found painful gallstones and high
\ncholesterol levels, but doctors ruled out surgery and instead
\nordered him to go on a diet.<\/p>\n
Estrada, 63, canceled his morning engagements to undergo x-
\nray, electrocardiogram and blood tests at the Cardinal Santos
\nMedical Center here on Tuesday, a day after he was seen grimacing
\nand clutching at his abdomen, when he had to take painkillers.<\/p>\n
During celebrations on Monday marking Philippine Independence
\nDay, Estrada appeared to be in pain and pressed his hand against
\nhis right side several times. He read his speeches with little
\nemotion and stuck closely to the text.<\/p>\n
He was back to his normal working schedule by Tuesday
\nafternoon, aides said.<\/p>\n
The president underwent tests on his heart, liver, abdominal
\narea and kidney. The tests found nothing out of the ordinary
\nexcept gallstones and a high level of cholesterol, his personal
\nphysician Lorenzo Hocson told reporters.<\/p>\n
Estrada was advised to go on a diet to control his cholesterol
\nlevel and take anti-spasmodic and enzyme medicine for the
\ngallstones, Hocson added.<\/p>\n
Tests found \"about four to five\" gallstones measuring between
\none and 1.2 centimeters (0.40 to 0.48-inches) in diameter in the
\nbladder, Hocson said.<\/p>\n
\"Now we're one in saying that the pain was mainly due to the
\ngallstones.\"<\/p>\n
\"That can be taken care of through diet,\" he stressed. \"No
\nneed for surgery.\"<\/p>\n
\"I know that the health of the president is a matter of
\nnational concern,\" presidential spokesman Ricardo Puno told
\nreporters.<\/p>\n
Executive Secretary Ronaldo Zamora said: \"If there is a big
\nproblem, we will be open about it. That cannot be hidden from the
\npublic.\"<\/p>\n
Except for arthritis and an eye problem which required surgery
\nlast year, Estrada has no known serious ailments. But he is a
\nsmoker and has admitted to heavy drinking when he was a film
\nstar.<\/p>",
